Biographical
Note
Maurice A. Fox, Hiram graduate of 1927, was born in Burton,
Ohio in 1906. After earning a Master’s degree in English from Ohio State
University, Mr. Fox taught and then served as an administrator of the Geauga
County schools. In 1936, Mr. Fox joined the Union Savings and Trust Company in
Warren. In 1942, he became vice president of the First National Bank of Burton
and remained at the institution throughout the remainder of his career, going on
to become the president and then chairman of the board of directors until 1982.
He earned several banking certificates from the American Institute of Banking
and was also a graduate of the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.
In his private life, Mr. Fox was married to Ethlynn Lampson
Fox (1906-1986). He was deeply involved with many charitable and civic
organizations in Geauga County. In 1975, he was selected to be a member of the
Garfield Society of Hiram College. A life member and past president of the
Geauga County Historical society, in his retirement, Mr. Fox turned his
interests to map collecting. On acquiring an 1826 map of the Western Reserve of
Ohio, Mr. Fox became fascinated with early cartography and became an expert with
a focus on North American maps, especially the Great Lakes region. In 1983,
Maurice and Ethlynn Fox presented to Hiram College 66 maps and 12 atlases which
became the foundation of the college’s special collection of antiquarian maps.
Maurice Fox died in 1992.
