The Alden-Dunham Collection
Edward Holmes Alden and Hercey Dunham Alden were the grandparents of
Edward W. Green (Hiram College, Class of 1940). After their marriage
in 1867, they moved to Hiram where they settled Greendale Farm. The
collection consists of their css. (1865-85) and the military records
(87th and 177th O.V.I.) and Civil War journal (1864-65) of Edward Alden.

The Allyn-Mason Collection
The collection consists of css. during the Civil War (1861-65) from men
of the Mason and Allyn families to John G. Mason and Emily Allyn Mason.
Also included is a small group of letters to and from Kate Allyn, a cousin
of Emily Allyn Mason. John G. Mason was the son of Carnot Mason, an early
settler of Hiram and one of the founders of the Western Reserve Eclectic
Institute. Emily Allyn Mason was the daughter of Pelatiah Allyn, another
early settler. Sherman Leach, one of the correspondents, served in Co. A
of the 42nd O.V.I., the regiment mustered and commanded by Col. James A.
Garfield.

The Bancroft Collection
Colman Bancroft was Professor of Mathematics at Hiram College from
1875-1914. The collection consists primarily of photographs and family
memorabilia.

The James H. Barrow Collection
James H. Barrow was Professor of Biology at Hiram College from 1957-88.
The collection consists of css. and other material relating primarily to
the Barrow Biological Field Station.

The Howard S. Bissell Collection
Howard S. Bissell was chairman of the Hiram College Board of Trustees from
1940-68.  The collection consists of his papers as chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The Grace Butcher Collection
Grace Butcher is a graduate of Hiram College (Class of 1966), poet, teacher and athlete.
The collection consists of drafts of her unpublished poetry, copies of her published work,
continuing correspondence with a close friend, newspaper clippings, and audio tapes of
poetry readings. 

The John N. Carr Collection
John N. Carr was a Hiram College trustee from 1980-89 and founder of the
Lubrizol Corporation. The collection consists of his personal papers.

The Amasa Clark Collection
Amasa Clark was an itinerant Baptist preacher whose circuit was the Ohio
Western Reserve from 1832 to c.1866. The collection consists of family
css., three diaries, and reports related to Clark's work.

The Elbert H. Clarke Collection
Elbert H. Clarke was Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at Hiram
College from 1917-57. He was also an ordained minister of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) and served a term as mayor of Hiram Village.
The collection consists of css., class notebooks, dissertation material,
publications, and unpublished writings.

The George H. Colton Collection
George H. Colton was Professor of Physical Science at Hiram College from
1890-1926. The collection consists of several addresses to Hiram College
classes, scrapbooks, tributes, and a biography.

The Mary E. Cowles Collection
Mary E. Cowles was a graduate of Hiram College (Class of 1932) who earned
a degree in Library Science and worked as a cataloger at Oberlin College
from 1942-91. Her bequest of one-half million dollars supported the
automation of the Hiram College Library. The collection consists of
scrapbooks, photographs, family records, and miscellaneous personal papers.

The Bailey S. Dean Collection
Bailey S. Dean was Professor of History at Hiram College from 1882-1915,
and Vice President of Hiram College from 1882-83. He was also an ordained
minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The collection
consists of diaries, sermons and other unpublished writings.

The Donald Dooley Collection
Donald Dooley was Professor of Physics at Hiram College from 1927-62. The
collection consists primarily of css., photographs, newspaper clippings,
and retirement tributes.

The Dale A. Dreisbach Collection
Dale A. Dreisbach was Professor of Chemistry at Hiram College from 1952-74.
The collection consists primarily of class notes.

The Paul H. Fall Collection
Paul H. Fall was the twelfth president of Hiram College (1940-57), having
previously served as Professor of Chemistry (1920-36). The collection
consists of his official papers as president of Hiram College.

The James A. Garfield Collection
James A. Garfield was a student at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute
(1852-54), teacher of Ancient Languages (1853; 1856-61), principal
(1857-63), and trustee (1864-81). In 1880 he was elected twentieth
President of the United States. The collection focuses on Garfield's Hiram
connections and includes a broad range of personal and professional
material, much of it in Garfield's own hand. The collection also includes
a virtually complete set of Garfield's speeches in pamphlet form and a
set of works about Garfield from his death to the present.

The Francis M. Green Collection
Francis M. Green was a student at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute.
He became an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
and wrote the first history of Hiram College: Hiram College and Western
Reserve Eclectic Institute: Fifty Years of History,
Cleveland, 1901.
The collection consists of an autobiography, scrapbooks, sermons, and
photographs.  There is also material related to Philander Green, Almon B. Green,
and Ruby Cowles.

The Paul M. Gustafson Collection
Paul M. Gustafson was Professor of Sociology at Hiram College from 1964-85.
The collection consists of professional papers.

The Reign S. Hadsell Collection
Reign S. Hadsell was a graduate of Hiram College (Class of 1926). He
became a teacher and, later, an education specialist with the United
States government. In 1991 he established the Hiram Community Trust to
support projects that foster a sense of community and civic pride by
encouraging cooperation between Hiram Village, Hiram Township, Hiram
College, and the Crestwood Local School District. The collection
consists of his research in various areas of local history and papers
relating to the Hiram Community Trust.

The Hale Collection
Charles K. And Wilbur L. Hale were ancestors of Hale Chatfield, Professor
of English at Hiram College. The collection consists of Civil War css.
from them to their family in Ulster County, New York. They were both
members of the 120th N.Y.V.

The Hayden Collection
Amos Sutton Hayden was the first principal of the Western Reserve Eclectic
Institute (1850-56). While some of his css. is contained in the collection,
the largest segment of the css. is to and from his son, Dearborn Hayden.
Also included is a copy of the diary of Sarah Hubbell Hayden,
daughter-in-law of William Hayden, one of the founders of the Western
Reserve Eclectic Institute.

The Henry Collection
Several generations of the Henry family have been students, trustees,
friends, and benefactors of Hiram College, beginning with Captain Charles
E. Henry, student at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute and confidant
of James A. Garfield. The collection contains Civil War material, css.,
and the personal and professional papers of Charles E. Henry, Frederick A.
Henry (Hiram College, Class of 1888), and Marcia Henry (Hiram College,
Class of 1891).

The Burke A. Hinsdale Collection
Burke A. Hinsdale was the third president of Hiram College (1872-82),
having previously attended the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute. He
later became Superintendent of the Cleveland Public Schools and Professor
of the History of Education at the University of Michigan. The collection
consists of Hinsdale's class notes, writings, much of his prolific
published work, and a bibliography compiled by Harold E. Davis.

The Elmer Jagow Collection
Elmer Jagow was the sixteenth president of Hiram College (1966-85). The
collection consists of papers from his presidency.

The Wendell G. Johnson Collection
Wendell G. Johnson was Professor of Mathematics at Hiram College from
1957-88, and Dean of Hiram College from 1964-69. The collection consists
of professional papers, lectures, and material relating to grants.

The John S. Kenyon Collection
John S. Kenyon graduated from Hiram College in 1898 and was Professor of
English at Hiram College from 1916-44. Considered the "dean of American
phoneticians," he was the consulting editor of pronunciation to the 2nd
edition of Webster's New International Dictionary (1934) and published
American Pronunciation (1924) and, with Thomas A. Knott, A Pronouncing
Dictionary of American English
(1944). His wife, Myra Pow Kenyon, also
graduated from Hiram College in the Class of 1898. The collection
consists of Kenyon's prolific css., English language and phonetics
materials, copies of his publications, and work on his genealogy of the
Pow family which utilized Pow family css.

The Roland V. Layton Collection
Roland V. Layton was Professor of History at Hiram College from 1967-90.
The collection consists of journals he kept while serving at Hiram College
and his css. since his retirement that is related to Hiram College.

The Nicholas Vachel Lindsay Collection
Vachel Lindsay attended Hiram College from 1896-99 and went on to become
a nationally known poet and artist, famous especially for his poem "The
Congo." He received a rare honorary degree from Hiram College in 1931.
The collection consists of all of his published work, original mss. and
drawings, writings about Lindsay, photographs, and memorabilia.

The Robert A. Liston Collection
Robert A. Liston graduated from Hiram College in 1949 and became the
prolific author of juvenile and adult non-fiction. Under various
pen-names, he also authored several works of romance fiction. The
collection consists of drafts, notes, css., and edited mss. of many of
his books.

The Peckham Collection
George A. Peckham was Professor of Classics and the Bible at Hiram
College from 1880-1926. Other members of the Peckham family graduated
from Hiram College in the early years of the twentieth century. The
collection consists of class notes and unpublished writings of George
A. Peckham, and css., scrapbooks, photographs, and memorabilia of other
family members.


The Adah M. Peirce Collection
Adah M. Peirce was Professor of Sociology at Hiram College from 1931-64,
and Dean of Women from 1931-48. The collection consists of personal
papers, material relating to her graduate degrees, and professional
papers relating to her career at Hiram College.

The Eugene H. Peters Collection
Eugene H. Peters was Professor of Philosophy at Hiram College from
1962-82. The collection consists of unpublished academic papers, css.,
publications, papers relating to Hiram College, and memorials.

The Grace E. Pickford Collection
Grace E. Pickford was the first female tenured faculty member at Yale
University. Following her retirement from Yale, she came to Hiram
College in 1970 as Distinguished Scientist in Residence and remained
until her death in 1986. The collection consists of personal papers
and memorabilia, photographs, scrapbooks of her scientific expeditions,
her extensive Css., and a complete collection of her publications in
the areas of earthworm and cephalopod taxonomy and fish physiology.

The Pow Family Collection
Myra Pow is the daughter of Robert Pow and Harriet Carrie Pow (Baldwin).
This was Robert Pow’s third marriage.  Myra had one sister, Lillie Pow (b. 1869).
Myra was the first American born generation of Pow’s.  Wife of John Kenyon, and
 mother of Martha and Elizabeth Kenyon.

The Rudolph/Carlton Collections
Several members of
the Rudolph family attended the Western Reserve
Eclectic Institute, including Lucretia Rudolph, wife of James A.
Garfield.
  Lucretia Garfield's niece, Adelaide Rudolph, attended Hiram
College and graduated in 1879.  A small collection of her personal
correspondence and photographs are also part of this collection.

 The family became connected with the Carltons when Lucretia's
cousin, Martha Rudolph, married Hampton Carlton. The collection consists
of family css., memorabilia, papers from student days at the Western
Reserve Eclectic Institute, photographs, and genealogical material.

The Michael E. Starr Collection
Michael E. Starr was Assistant Professor of History at Hiram College
from 1977 until his untimely death in 1984. The collection consists
of personal papers, professional papers and papers relating to his
extensive grant work, and copies of his publications.

The James J. Turner Collection
James J. Turner was Professor of Biology at Hiram College from 1906-50.
The collection consists of several notebooks of unpublished research.

The Mary Louise Vincent Collection
Mary Louise Vincent was Professor of English at Hiram College from
1939-84. She is affectionately remembered by several generations of
Hiram College students for her challenging teaching of creative writing.
The collection consists of photographs, tributes written upon her
retirement in 1984, and newspaper clippings.

The Wakefield Collection
Edmund B. Wakefield graduated from Hiram College in 1870, was Professor
of Natural Science (1871-74) and Biblical Literature (1890-1912), and
acting president of Hiram College (1903-05). Additionally, he served
in the Civil War (Co. G., 177th O.V.I.), was a member of the United
States Geological Survey of the Yellowstone under F.V. Hayden in 1874,
and was an ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ). Other members of the Wakefield family were also associated
with Hiram College. The collection consists of extensive Edmund B.
Wakefield css., his Civil War memoirs, and css. between other members
of the Wakefield family.
