ABELL (Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature) - Bibliography of works published since 1921 related to the study of English language and literature, including British, American, and Commonwealth.

Academic Search Complete - Multidisciplinary database that indexes and abstracts some 9,300 periodicals, both popular and scholarly.  Provides full-text to more than 5,300 journals.

AP Images - Online archives of the Associated Press for photographs (back to the mid-1800s), graphics (diagrams, maps, charts, etc.) and audio files.

ACM Digital Library - Provides the full-text of 10 journals and 13 transactions published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), plus two journals co-sponsored by ACM.  Most of the journals are covered from the first issue to the present.  You can search the entire database (not all full-text is available to Hiram users) or browse by a specific journal.

ACS Publications - Also known as the ACS Legacy Archives, this database provides the full-text of journals published by the American Chemical Society (ACS).  Most coverage is from volume 1, issue 1 to the present.  Newer issues are also available through OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center.

African-American Poetry - Full-text of some 2,500 poems written in the late 18th and the early 19th centuries.

Alt Healthwatch - A full-text database focusing on complementary, holistic, and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.  Covers more than 170 reports, proceedings, newsletters, and periodicals, plus pamphlets and book excerpts.

Agricola - Produced by the National Agricultural Library, the database indexes books, journal articles, reports, and other materials concerning agriculture and related disciplines.  Covers materials from 1979 to the present.

America: History and Life - Indexes more than 2,000 journals covering American and Canadian history from prehistory to the present.  Also includes citations to relevant book reviews and dissertations.

America's Newspapers - Complete full-text of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (from 1991) and the Akron Beacon Journal (from 1985),  plus the full-text of 15 other Ohio newspapers and 13 newspapers from across the Untied States.  Now includes 26 news magazines, too.

American City Business Journals - This free to all database contains the searchable full-text from 39 metropolitan business newspapers, all published by American City Business Journals, Inc.  covering 1996 to the present, the database includes publications from Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo, among others.

American Drama - Provides the full-text of some 700 plays from more than 300 playwrights.  When complete, the database will provide the text of more than 2,000 plays from 1714 to the present.

American Heritage Dictionary - Searchable full-text version of the fourth edition.

American History: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books for American history.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

American Law, Politics, Government: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books for American politics, government, and law.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

American Memory Project - More than 7 million items from some 100 historical collections at the Library of Congress.

American Periodicals Series - Full-text of more than 1,000 periodicals published in the United States between 1741 and 1900.  Includes general interest magazine, women's magazines, and scientific and medical journals.  A great resource for American history and literature.

American Poetry - Full-text of some 35,000 poems by more than 200 American poets from colonial times to the early 20th century.

Annual Reviews - Searchable text of all 29 Annual Reviews publications.  Full-text is provided from 1996 (or volume 1, if it is more recent) to the present, with bibliographic citations for the years 1984 through 1995.

Anthropology Plus - Indexes articles and essays related to anthropology, archaeology, folklore, ethology, and material culture.  Covers publications from the late 19th-century to the present.  combines the coverage of two indexes, Anthropological Literature and Anthropological Index.

Art Abstracts - Indexes and abstracts more than 300 international art publications.  Now covers materials published from 1929 to the present.

ART Collection - Digital images of art works from museums around the world.  The art is from prehistoric times to the present and all forms of art (painting, sculpture, photography, etc.) are included.

ARTFL - Contains the full-text of nearly 2,000 texts from classic works in French literature, including non-fiction prose.  Covers the 17th through the 20th century with some Medieval and Renaissance texts also available.

Articles First - Indexes articles from more than 12,000 periodicals covering all subjects.  Covers 1990 to the present.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index - Indexes more than 1,100 journals in the humanities.  Also provides access by cited reference.  Covers 1980 to the present.

ATLA Religion Index - Religion Index, produced by the American Theological Society, is the index to journal articles, book reviews, and essay collections in all areas of religious studies.  coverage begins in 1949 and includes more than one million citations from more than 1,400 international journals and 14,000 multi-authored works. 

Bible in English - Contains the full-text of 13 complete editions, five New Testaments, two Gospel works, and William Tynsdale's New Testament, Pentateuch, and Johan.  Bibles are from the 10th century through the 20th century.

Bibliography of American Literature - The online version of the nine-volume print set (published between 1955 and 1991) listing more than 40,000 literary works by significant authors from the Revolution through 1930.

Bibliography of Asian Studies - Indexes journal articles, books, chapters, proceedings, and other materials related to Asian studies and published in Western languages.  Includes the most recetn 20 years of the print version of the Bibliography of Asian Studies (1971-1991) and, since 1991, citations to all articles in the 100 most-used journals in Asian studies.

Bibliography of Native North Americans - Indexes books, essays, journal articles, and government documents related to all aspects of native North American history, culture, and life.

Biography Reference Bank - Narrative articles drawn from a variety of standard reference sources, on more than a half million people from antiquity to the present.  Also includes periodical articles, interviews, speeches, and obituaries.

Biological Abstracts - The key indexing source in biology, it covers nearly 6,000 journals published around the world.

Books in Print - More than 1.8 million records for books currently in-print, forthcoming, or out-of-print.

Borror Laboratory of Bioacoustics, Digital Animal Sounds - Contains digitized audio recordings of songbirds.  Additional animal and bird sounds will be added as they are digitized.  The Borror Laboratory houses one of the largest collections of recorded animal sounds in the world with more than 30,000 recordings of some 1000 species.

Business and Industry - Index to some 1,000 trade and business publications with more than 60% available in full-text.  As of June 30, 2006, the database was closed and new citations no longer added.

Business Source Complete - Indexes and abstracts some 5,000 business-related publications.  Provides full-text to more than 4,000 periodicals.  Coverage of important scholarly journals goes back to the first issue (or back to 1886 in the most extreme case).  Also includes financial data, industry reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses, market research reports, and more.

C Q Researcher - Each weekly issue of the CQ Researcher provides in-depth coverage of a single issue in the news.  Each issue follows a standard template to provide overview, background, an assessment of the current situation, outlook, chronology, pro and con essays, and a bibliography.  Browsable by issue or topic and searchable by key word across the full-text.

Chicago Manual of Style Online - Searchable online version of the 15th edition of "the bible of the publishing and research community."

Chicano Database - Indexes all types of material on Mexican-American topics, as well as the broader Latino experience, including Chicano, Puerto Ricans, Cuban-Americans, and Central American immigrants.  Covers 1967 to the present.

China Online Journals - More than 250 Chinese language journals in the humanities and social scienes from 1997 to the present. 

Choice Reviews Online - Fully-searchable reviews of scholarly books back to 1988, as well as complete recent issues of Choice, the major reviewing source for academic libraries.

CINAHL Plus - Indexes some 1,800 journals in nursing and allied health.  Coverage back to 1982.  Coverage of material not yet incorporated into the database is available in Pre-CINAHL.

Clase and Periodica - Indexes articles, books, proceedings, and reports published in Latin America.  covers sciences, social sciences, and humanities.  Includes indexing to some 2,600 scholarly journals published in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Cleveland News Index - A free service indexing the Cleveland Plain Dealer (1983 through June 1999), Cleveland Magazine (from 1983), Northern Ohio Live (from September 1990), and Ohio Magazine (from October 1990).

Columbia Encyclopedia - This online version of the sixth edition contains more than 50,000 brief entries.

Communication and Mass Media Complete - Indexes some 400 titles related to the media and communication studies.  Nearly 200 of the titles are also available in full-text.  Some coverage back as far as 1915.

Compendex - Indexes more than 2,600 journals in all areas of engineering.

Compendex Historical - Indexes and abstracts engineering literature published from 1884 to 1979.

Computer Source - Full-text resource of more than 300 publications (from popular to scholarly) related to computer science, programming, artificial intelligence, cybernetics, robotics, and information systems.

Computers and Applied Sciences Complete - Indexes and abstracts scholarly journals, professional publications, and other sources related to computer science and applied sciences such as engineering.

Consumer Health Complete - Full-text of health information from books, pamphlets, and periodicals, all written for the general health care consumer.  Also includes some 700 videos.

Contemporary Women's Issues - Index, with a large number of full-text entries, to journal articles, newsletters, research reports, and government publications related to women.  Covers 1992 to the present.   As of June 30, 2006, the database was closed and new citations no longer added.

Dissertation Abstracts (ProQuest Dissertations and Theses) - Index, with abstracts, to more than 2 million doctoral dissertations and master's theses, mostly from the United States.

Digital Media Center - Contains a number of databases, listed elsewhere on this page, that contain digital images, sounds, and other electronic media.

Digital Video Collection - Nearly 1,000 full-length videos, mostly from the Films for the Humanities and Sciences.  Requires the free RealPlayer plug-in.

Dolphin Embryo Digitized Slides - Digital images of histological sections of Pantropical Spotted Dolphin embryos.  For more information, see the Digital Library of Dolphin Development at NEOUCOM.

Early American Fiction - Provides the full-text of the first editions of American novels and short stories (some 450 works) written before 1850.

Early Americas Digital Archive - Full-text of materials written in or about the Americas from 1492 to about 1820.  Part of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) at the University of Maryland.

EBSCO Animals - Indexing, with full-text, to resources on a variety of topics related to animals.  Focus is on the nature and habitat of familiar animals.  Also includes images.  Most information comes from the Encyclopedia of Animals.

EBSCOHost - Technically, EBSCOhost is not a database, but rather a collection of databases from the same company, all of which use the same interface.  The 52 EBSCO databases currently available at Hiram are listed below.  The links will send you to the description of the database.  To access the databases, go to the Databases - Alphabetical page or, if you are on campus, go to the EBSCOHost page and select the database(s) you wish to search (most are listed under the EBSCOhost Web link).

EconLit - Provides indexing and abstracting to 860+ periodicals in the field of economics.  Also covers books, essays, dissertations, and working papers.  Covers 1969 to the present.

Economia y Negocios - Indexes more than 200 Spanish- and Portuguese-language periodicals related to business and economics.

Editions and Adaptations of Shakespeare - The full-text of eleven major editions of Shakespeare's works, along with 24 contemporary printings of individual plays and more than 100 adaptations and sequels from the 17th through the 19th centuries.

Education: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books for education.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

Education Abstracts - Indexes periodicals, monographs, and yearbooks in all areas of education.  Coverage back to 1983.

Eighteenth Century Fiction - Full-text of nearly 100 works of British prose form 1700 to 1780.

Electronic Journal Center (EJC) - Searchable, full-text issues of journals from a number of major publishers.  More than 5,500 journals are available.

Electronic Reference Books Collection - Full-text of hundreds of specialized reference books, including encyclopedias, handbooks, and biographical collections.  The text is fully searchable.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center - Online repository of masters' theses and doctoral dissertations from graduate students at participating Ohio institutions.  Covers 2000 to the present.

Encyclopedia of Physics Demonstrations - Some 600 demonstrations of physics principles.  Videos are in Real Video format.

English Poetry 600-1900 - Provides the full-text of more than 175,000 poems by some 1400 poets from the British Commonwealth and ex-colonial countries.

English Prose Drama - Full-text of more than 1,800 plays from the Renaissance through the 19th century.

English Short Title Catalog - Describes works printed in any language in England or its dependencies from the beginning of printing through the 18th century.  Also includes works printed in English anywhere in the world during the same time period.

English Verse Drama - Full-text of more than 1,500 works of poetry intended for the stage.  Coverage is from the late 13th century through the 19th century.

Environment: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books for the environment.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

Environment Complete - Indexes and abstracts articles from more than 1,000 journals related to all aspects of the environment and ecology.  Also includes the full-text of some 80 books and the conference papers of the North American Association of Environmental Education.

ERIC - The world's largest source of education information.  ERIC indexes journal articles, research reports, surveys, curriculum and teaching guides, and instructional materials.

Ethnic Groups and Cultural Geography: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books for ethnic groups around the world.  this is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

Ethnic Newswatch - Provides in-depth, full-text coverage to a wide range of current and historical topics.  Text is from 200 publications of the ethnic, minority, and native press.  Some articles date back to the mid-1980s with 7,500 articles added each month.  Some articles are in Spanish and a Spanish search interface is available.

Family and Social Issues: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books related to family and social issues.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index - This free to all index covers journal articles, essays in books, and book reviews about women and gender in the Middle Ages.

Film and Television Literature Index - Indexes and abstracts some 600 periodicals related to film, film writing, and television.  Includes reviews.

Folklore, Mythology, Literature: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books related to mythology, folklore, and literature around the world.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

Foreign Language Digital Videos - Contains more than 175 short (from about 10 seconds to a minute and a half) video clips of native speakers on a variety of topics related to their culture and eveyday life.  Languages include Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Swahili.  Produced by the ViewPoints Project of the Five Colleges of Ohio, the videos are in QuickTime format.

Francis - Covers a variety of multilingual, multidisciplinary information in the humanities and social sciences.  The emphasis is on Europe.  Covers 1984 to the present.

Fuente Academica - Spanish-language articles, with full-text, from 260 scholarly journals covering academic study.

Funk and Wagnalls New World Encylcopedia - More than 25,000 entries in an encyclopedia aimed at middle- and high-school students.

Garden, Landscape, and Horticulture Index - Indexes and abstracts from more than 300 periodicals covering all aspects of gardening.

Gender Issues: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books related to gender and women's studies.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

Gender Studies Database - Indexes journal articles, books, conference papers, reports, dissertations, and other materials related to women's studies, men's studies, and sexual diversity issues.

Geology Digital Photos - Photographs from around the world showing natural features and the human impact on the environment.

GeoRef - Indexes more than 2,000 journals, plus books and other materials, related to geology, geography, ecology, and related disciplines.

GLBT Life - Indexes periodicals and books related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues.

Gongwer News Service - Provides daily news coverage of Ohio government and politics.  Includes coverage of all bills in the Ohio General Assembly.

GPO Monthly Catalog - Indexes more than 500,000 U.S. government publications from July 1976 to the present.

Greek and Latin Inscriptions - A collection of digitized squeezes (accurate paper impressions) of Greek and Latin inscriptions from Greece, Italy, and Macedonia.  The collection is from the Center for Epigraphical and palaeographical Studies at The Ohio State University.

GreenFILE - Free database that indexes the literature (books, journals, magazines, reports, and government documents) on environmental issues.  Some coverage goes back to the 1970s with indexing of several journal titles going back even farther.

Hand Press Book - Contains the records from 48 European research libraries for books from the hand press era, roughly 1445 to 1830.

Handbook of Latin American Studies - Indexes, with some descriptions, books, book chapters, conference papers, and articles related to Latin American studies.  covers 1990 to the present.

HarpWeek - Contains the text and images from Harper's Weekly from the Civil War and early Reconstruction periods (1857-1871).

Health Source: Consumer Edition - Full-text of some 200 consumer-oriented health periodicals covering topics such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, aging, and nutrition.  Also includes the full-text of nearly 1,200 pamphlets, 20 reference books, and 7,000 Clinical Reference Systems reports.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition - Provides indexing and abstracting to more than 600 periodicals in nursing and allied health.  Provides full-text to more than 575 publications with more than 425 being peer-reviewed journals.

Highwire - While mostly a subscription required site, Highwire is also the largest archive of free, full-text science articles.  There are 34 free journals and another 219 journals that provide free access to the backfiles (issues older than 6 months to 2 years depending on the specific journal title).  The Hiram College Library has linked to as many individual titles as it can in the Periodical Holdings List.

Historic and Archival Digital Media - A collection of digitized photos, documents, and oral histories from Ohio history.

Historical Abstracts - Indexes more than 2,000 journals covering the history of the world (except the United States and Canada, which are covered in America: History and Life) from 1450 to the present.  Also indexes relevant book reviews and dissertations.

Historical Statistics of the United States - Fully searchable data tables on population, economics, health, education, etc. throughout U.S. history.  Tables may be printed or downloaded into Excel, SAS, or SPSS.

History Cooperative - A mostly free to all collection of scholarly history journals.  A few are limited to on-campus only use or not available at all.  Individual journal titles are in the Hiram College periodicals list.  Also includes some conference papers and the Booker T. Washington papers.

History of Science, Technology, and Medicine - Indexes journal articles, books, reviews, and other materials related to the history of science and technology.

Humanities E-Book - This database, produced by the American Council for Learned Societies, provides searchable full-text of some 1500 books in most humanities disciplines and area studies.  The titles are from 250 publishers.

Humanities International Complete - Indexes and abstracts some 1,900 periodical titles with some coverage as far back as 1925.  Also indexes books, essays, reviews, and original creative work including fiction and poems.

ISI Web of Science - The combined database of the Science Citation Index, the Social Science Citation Index, and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index.  Searchable by keyword, but more importantly by cited reference.

Images.MD - More than 55,000 images from some 90 collections covering medical topics from allergy to urology.  The images come from Current Medicine's series of illustrated atlases.

Index to 19th Century American Art Periodicals - Indexes 42 art journals published in the United States during the 19th century.

INSPEC - Covers the scientific and technical literature in physics, computer science, information technology, and electrical engineering.  The database indexes and abstracts articles from more than 4,000 journals, more than 2,000 conference proceedings, books, reports, and dissertations.  Coverage is worldwide and goes back to 1969.

INSPEC Archive - Online version of Science Abstracts Journals.  Covers the scientific and technical literature in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, and computing and control engineering.  Covers the years 1898 through 1968.

Insurance Periodicals Index - Indexes and abstracts more than 200 key insurance industry journals, magazines, and trade publications.  Coverage back to 1965 for some titles.

International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance - Indexes articles, books, book chapters, and dissertations on all aspects of theatre and performance.  Coverage goes back to 1984.

International Issues: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books related to international affairs.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

International Political Science Abstracts - Produced by the International Political Science Association, this database indexes dome 900 of the world's leading political science journals.

ITER - A bibliography of books and articles related to all aspects of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (400-1700) in Europe.

JSTOR - Fully searchable full-text of nearly 500 scholarly journals.  JSTOR provides back files to the first issue of a journal, but stops 3 to 5 years before the current publication year.  Covers all disciplines.

Kent State Shootings Oral Histories - Oral histories (both sound and transcripts are available for most of the histories) from eyewitnesses to the May 4, 1970 Kent State shootings and its aftermath.  The QuickTime player is needed to listen to the audio files.

Kids Search (grades K-5) - A colorful, graphical interface to search magazine articles, photographs, pictures, encyclopedias, and a dictionary.  The content is similar to Primary Search, which uses the standard EBSCO interface.  Most entries include a Lexile score to indicate reading level.

Lake Erie's Yesterdays - Historic photos of northwestern Ohio focusing on the Lake Erie islands and its western basin.  The photos, all in black and white, were produced by Ernst Niebergall (a commercial photographer in Sandusky) between 1909 and 1915.  From the Charles E. Frohman Collection in the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.

Landsat 7 Satellite Images - Digital snapshots of Ohio from the Landsat 7 satellite.  New snapshots are taken every 16 days, weather permitting.  Each snapshot covers an area approximately 155 miles wide by 106 miles long.  Older images are archived and available.  Ohio is covered by 9 different snapshots.

Learning Express Library - Provides interactive practice tests, including GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and Praxis 1.  Users must set up an individual account from an on-campus computer and then they may access the database from anywhere.

Legal Collection - Provides the full-text of nearly 250 key law journals.  Covers all aspects of law, including federal and international law, medical, labor, and human resource law, and criminal justice.

Lexi-PALS - Patient Advisory Leaflets (PALS) that provide patients with information on medications, including side effects, monitoring recommendations, brand names for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.  Contains leaflets for some 1,450 medications with nearly half also available in Spanish.

LexisNexis Academic Universe - More than 5,000 sources provide full-text coverage of business, law, medicine and health, news, and general reference sources.

Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts - Indexes periodicals, books, research reports, and proceedings in all areas of librarianship, information science, and educational technology.  Coverage as far back as the mid-1960s.

Literary Reference Center - A comprehensive database that provides author biographies, plot summaries, criticism (from some 300 literary journals), book reviews, author interviews, and the text of 25,000 poems and 11,000 short stories.

MAS Ultra: School Edition - Indexes more than 600 periodicals for high school students with some 500 in full-text.  Also includes an image collection, some basic reference sources, and tables, charts, and graphs.

MasterFILE Premier - Provides full-text to more than 1,900 general periodicals and indexing to more than 2,500.  Similar to Academic Search Premier, but more oriented to popular magazines such as People and Ladies Home Journal.  Updated daily with some coverage back to 1975.  Also includes photos, maps, and flags.

MathSciNet - This online version of Mathematical Reviews and Current Mathematical Publications indexes articles and books in mathematics from 1940 to the present.

Mayan Archaeology Digital Photographs - Collection of photographs of Mayan archaeology from Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.

MedicLatina - Full-text of nearly 100 peer-reviewed Spanish-language journals in medical research.

Medline - Indexes 3,900 international journals (in 40 languages) in the health sciences.  Nursing, dentistry, and pharmacy are included in addition to medicine and medical research.

Medline 1953-1965 - Citations to articles from medical and health sciences journals from around the world published from 1953 to 1965.

Mergent Online - This online version of Moody's Manuals provides financial and other basic information on some 10,000 U.S. publicly traded companies.

Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary - The tenth edition of a standard dictionary.

Middle Search Plus - Designed for middle schoolers, this database indexes nearly 200 magazines with some 150 in full-text.  Also includes photos, maps, flags, biographies, and primary source documents.

Military History: e-reference books - A collection of online reference books on military history, including individual wars, around the world.  The focus is on the 20th century.  This is a subset of the Electronic Reference Books database.

MLA Directory of Periodicals - Provides addresses, ad rates, and submission information for more than 4,400 periodicals regularly indexed in the MLA International Bibliography.

MLA International Bibliography - Indexes articles, books, and dissertations on modern literature, languages, folklore, and linguistics.  Coverage goes back to 1926.

Morgan Bibliography of Ohio Imprints, 1796 - 1850 - Describes 9,400 books, pamphlets, and broadsides published in Ohio.  The bibliography also lists libraries that own copies of these items.

National Academies Press - The National Academy Press, created by the National Academies to publish the reports issued by the national Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council, makes available more than 1,500 of its books available free online.

National Criminal Justice Reference Service Abstracts Database - This free-to-all database provides summaries of more than 185,000 criminal justice publications, including Federal, state, and local government reports, books, research reports, journals articles, and unpublished research.  Some of the items are available in the NCJRS Virtual Library (http://fulltextpubs.ncjrs.org), a separate, fully-searchable, full-text database.

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Digital Images - Digital documents and photographs (by Matthew Brady) related to slavery, abolition, and emancipation.  The original documents are from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the digitized versions are provided by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center E-Books - Electronic versions of historical books from the collections at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.  All text is searchable.

Natural and Alternative Treatments - More than 700 evidence-based articles, with references to a total of 12,000 such studies, covering herbs and supplements, alternative therapies, drug interactions, functional foods, and homeopathy.

Naxos Music Library - Online collection of classical music with more than 85,000 tracks.  Also includes jazz, world, folk, and Chinese music.  Tracks are from the catalogs of the Naxos, Marco Polo, and Dacapo labels.  Requires Windows Media Player.

netLibrary - Hiram College students, faculty, and staff have access to more than 1,100 books in full-text in this collection.  In additional to these titles, a number of books in the public domain are available to all users.

Oxford English Dictionary - The standard historical dictionary of the English language, the second edition lists more than one million words.

Oxford Reference, Bilingual Dictionaries - A collection of bilingual dictionaries for English and French, Spanish, Latin, German, and Italian.  This is a subset of the Oxford Reference Online database.

Saskia Art History Images - Digital images of works in Western art.  Based on images from three major textbooks on Western art history.

Science Citation Index - Provides indexing to more than 5,700 research journals in all areas of science.  Also provides access by cited references.  Covers 1980 to the present.

Science Digital Media - A group of digital collections for the sciences.

Science Online - Comprehensive overview of a broad range of scientific disciplines tied to state and national curriculum standards.  Includes essays on major topics, biographies, videos, charts, experiments, and activities.

SCIPIO - Describes art auction and rare book catalogs for sales from the late sixteenth-century to the present.

E. W. Scripps Papers, 1868-1926 - A growing collection of digitized letters and photos from the Scripps Manuscript Collection of Ohio University.  Edward Willis Scripps was a businessman and a journalist associated with founding both the Scripps Howard newspaper chain and the news agency that is now United Press International (UPI).

Searchataurus (elementary and middle school students) - A colorful graphic interface to search magazine articles, pictures, encyclopedias, and a dictionary appropriate for elementary and middle school students.  Lexile scores for reading level are provided and the results can be limited to specific reading levels.  The content is similar to the Middle Search Plus and Primary Search databases, both of which use the standard EBSCO interface.

Social Science Citation Index - Indexes more than 1,700 journals in the social sciences.  Also provides access by cited references.  Covers 1980 to the present.

Social Sciences Digital Media - Part of OhioLINK's Digital Media Center, this database provides a variety of resources including Greek and Latin squeezes (accurate paper impressions) and more than 500 images related to Mayan archaeology.

SocIndex - Indexes, with abstracts, 590 "core journals" back to 1895 in all fields of sociology, including anthropology, criminology, demography, and urban studies.


Sociological Abstracts - Indexes and abstracts articles from more than 1,900 journals in the field of sociology, plus book abstracts and review citations.  As of July 1, 2005, the database was closed and citations no longer added.

SPORTDiscus - Indexes more than 400 journals in sports and sports medicine.  coverage back to 1985.  Also indexes books and conference proceedings.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy - Dynamic encyclopedia that is still a work in progress.  Maintained and kept current by a group of experts, this is a project of the Metaphysics Research Lab at Stanford.

Stat-USA - Current statistical information from the United States government.

Student Research Center (grades 6-12) - A graphical interface to search magazines, newspapers, biographies, country reports, news transcripts, and other resources appropriate for students in grades 6-12.  Also has links to state curriculum standards.  The content is roughly equivalent to the Middle Search Plus and MAS Ultra: School Edition databases, both of which use the standard EBSCO interface.

TOCS-IN - Free-to-all, TOCS-IN (Tables of Contents of Journals of Interest to Classicists) provides keyword searching to the tables of contents of some 185 journals related to classics, Near Eastern studies, and religion.  A volunteer project affiliated with the University of Toronto, most coverage begins in 1992, although older material is included.

TOPICSearch - Current events database covering social, political, economic, and scientific events.  Full-text from magazines, newspapers, polls, government documents, and other resources.  Aimed at high school and middle school students.

Twentieth-Century African American Poetry - Full-text of12,000 poems bymore than 100 poets.  Biographical profiles of the poets are included.

Twentieth-Century American Poetry - Full-text of more than 52,000 poems from collected works and individual volumes of some 315 poets.

Twentieth-Century English Poetry - Full-text of more than 44,000 poems by some 288 English poets.  Incorporates the Modern Poetry Collection and the Faber Poetry Library.

University of Pennsylvania Digital Library - This free-to-all section of Penn's Digital Library contains the full-text of more than 20,000 books.  You can look by author, title, or subject or search by keywords in the title.

University of Virginia Electronic Text Center -  A project of the University of Virginia Libraries, the Electronic Text Center provides approximately 45,000 online and offline texts in the humanities.  The texts cover 12 languages.  A number of the texts are restricted to University of Virginia users, but the rest are available to all.  Especially useful are the texts from the University of Virginia special collections. 

Value Line Research Center - Full-text of the print Value Line Investment Survey, plus six other Value Line publications covering stocks, mutual funds, daily options, and convertibles.

Vente et Gestion - Full-text coverage of French-language business journals, including journals for academics and the professional.

Vocational and Career Collection - Provides full-text coverage of more than 300 trade and industry related periodicals.

William Butler Yeats Collection - A complete electronic edition of Yeats's work, bringing together 22 printed volumes of critical and fictional prose, poetry, and plays.

Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000 - More than 20,000 pages of documents representing 57 projects related to the history of women in American social movements.  Some 1,600 documents, 600 images, and more than 600 links to other websites are included.

Women Writers Online - Provides the full-text of several hundred publications (books, essays, pamphlets, etc.) by women between 1400 and 1850.
