Getting ERIC Documents
Citations from the ERIC database having an ERIC
number beginning with ED, for
example, ED401944, are ERIC documents. These are typically
research reports,
conference presentations, issues, or theses and they are often
unpublished except as
ERIC documents. ERIC documents may also be books that are
commercially
published, government publications, or special issues of journals.
ERIC documents are
available in a microfiche collection to which some libraries, but not
the Hiram College
Library, subscribe. There are four ways you might be able
to obtain an ERIC document.
If you have any questions or need help, please consult a reference
librarian.
1. Online
As
of October 1, 2004, ERIC began making some 107,000 ERIC documents
published since 1993 available online. Just click the Find a Copy
link or on the OLinks icon.
2. In the Hiram College Library
While the library does not subscribe to
the ERIC microfiche collection, it does receive some ERIC documents as a
depository for U.S. government documents. Most of the ERIC
documents the library receives are reports or papers produced or funded
by the U.S. Department of Education. These are on microfiche,
located in the microforms room on the main floor, with a government
documents number of ED 1.310/2:xxxxxx, where the xxxxxx equals the ERIC
ED number. Thus, ED329101 would be found as
ED 1.310/2:329101.
You should also check the library's catalog
in case the document is a book or journal.
3. Visiting Another Library
Several libraries in the area do
subscribe to the ERIC microfiche collection and you can go there and use
the collection. The nearest library is the Kent
State University Library.
For more information on the collection at Kent State or to find other
nearby libraries, check ERIC's Directory
of Locations.

4. Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Before requesting an ERIC document
on interlibrary loan, you should check the OhioLINK central catalog and
request it directly from another library. If the document is not
listed in the OhioLINK catalog, you may be able to obtain it through
interlibrary loan. To request an ERIC document this way, please
fill out a white Interlibrary Loan Book Request form (available on the
right counter as you enter the library) and note your source as ERIC,
EDxxxxxx. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for delivery.
How long you may keep the document is up to the lending library.

5. Purchase the Document
You may
purchase most ERIC documents directly from ERIC. About 90% are
available from the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS); the
remaining documents, in all likelihood, are commercial publications and
should be available either in the library or through interlibrary loan.
Most documents may be ordered online and a growing number are available
for online delivery in Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf). Paper
and microfiche copies are also available. To order or get more
