These databases are designed to help you identify relevant periodical articles through keyword or subject searches. In most cases there will be links to either the online version of the article or a listing of the library's holdings. If you are not sure, you may check the library's Periodical Holdings List and/or its alphabetical list of article databases. These databases are listed in the order in which the library recommends them.
Medline (EBSCO). The National Library of Medicine’s database of more than 11 million bibliographic citations in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care, and related areas. This EBSCO version adds full-text for a number of journals, as well as a Find It link for other citations so you can determine if the Hiram College Library provides access to that article.
Medline (PubMed). The National Library of Medicine’s own site provides free access to Medline, its database of more than 11 million bibliographic citations in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care, and related areas. Adds links to the full-text of articles at participating publisher’s Web sites, as well as to the molecular biology database maintained by National Center for Biotechnology Information.
CINAHL Plus with Full Text. Indexes some 1,800 journals in nursing and allied health, with full text of more than 770 journals. Coverage back to 1982.
ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source. Provides indexing and abstracting for 525 titles related to nursing, allied health, and medicine. More than 470 titles are available in full-text.
Biosis Previews. The key indexing source in biology, it covers nearly 6,000 journals published around the world.
No Off Campus Access
SocIndex with Full Text. Indexes, with abstracts, 590 "core journals" back to 1895 in all fields of sociology, including anthropology, criminology, demography, and urban studies.
Consumer Health Complete. Designed to support the information needs of patients with the full-text of reference books, evidence-based health reports, images, videos, and more.
Health Source: Consumer Edition. Full-text of some 200 consumer-oriented health periodicals covering topics such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, aging, and nutrition. Also includes the full-text of nearly 1,200 pamphlets, 20 reference books, and 7,000 Clinical Reference Systems reports.
Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition. Provides indexing and abstracting to more than 600 periodicals in nursing and allied health. Provides full-text to more than 575 publications with more than 425 being peer-reviewed journals.
Environment Complete. Indexes and abstracts articles from more than 1,000 journals related to all aspects of the environment and ecology. Also includes the full-text of some 80 books and the conference papers of the North American Association of Environmental Education.
Public Affairs Index. Indexes periodicals from around the world related to public policy issues, including crime, poverty, education, and more.
ISI Web of Science. Part of the Web of Knowledge platform, this is the combined database of the Science Citation Index, the Social Science Citation Index, and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Searchable by keyword and author, but more importantly by cited reference.
Academic Search Complete. Multidisciplinary database that indexes and abstracts some 9,300 periodicals, both popular and scholarly. Provides full-text to more than 5,300 journals.
Electronic Journal Center (EJC). Searchable, full-text issues of journals from a number of major publishers. More than 7,000 journals are available.
JSTOR. Fully searchable full-text of nearly 1,000 scholarly journals. JSTOR provides back files to the first issue of a journal, but stops 3 to 5 years before the current publication year. Covers all disciplines.
