New Videos

Class Dismissed: How TV Frames the Working Class (Film 302.2345 C568 2005 DVD) - This documentary, based on a forthcoming book by Pepi Liestyna, looks at how the working class has been portrayed on TV.  The film looks at sitcoms, reality shows, police dramas, and talk shows.

Journey of Man (Film 599.938 J8268 2004 DVD) - This PBS program looks at a group of geneticists who have worked for ten years to attempt to answer the questions "Where do we call come from?" and "How did we populate the globe?"

Diatoms: Life in Glass Houses (Film 579.85 D5432 2003 DVD) - Covers all aspects of diatoms with a focus on how they deal with the problems of living within cell walls made of silica.

Max Ernst (Film 759.3 Er67m 2002 DVD) - Peter Schamoni uses original film footage and photographs to tell the life of the influential, twentieth-century artist Max Ernst.

Origins of India's Hindu Civilization (Film 294.50954 Or46 1991 DVD) - Looks at the evolution of the pantheon of gods brought to India by Indo-Aryan invaders into the Hindu religion that is a large part of contemporary India's culture.

The Complete Blue Eyed with Jane Elliott (Film305.8 C73856 2004 DVD) - This DVD includes all three versions of Jane Elliott's "blue eyed/brown eyed" experiment.  In addition to the original (93 minutes), a 30-minute version, and an "essential" hour-longer version, a trainer's manual is also included.

Sounding the Trumpet: The Making of John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address (Film 352.2386 K383t 2005 DVD) - A companion to the book of the same title, the DVD shows Kennedy's swearing in and his inaugural address.

Remarkable Plants: The Oedogoniales (Green Algae) (Film 579.83 R281 2004 DVD) - A look at the way "simple" cells live and evolve by looking at a group of filamentous green algae.

India: Land of the Monsoon (Film 915.404 In235 1991 DVD) -  Looks at the role of the monsoon cycle in day-to-day life and in the forming of Indian society and culture.

A Lion in the House (Film 618.92994 L661 2006 DVD) - Produced by Steven Bognar, this documentary looks at five children (ages 6 to 19) who are fighting cancer.  The documentary covers a six year time period in that fight.

Rocks with Wings (Film 796.3236208 R592 2002 DVD) - Looks at coach Jerry Richardson and his team as he works to turn the Shiprock Lady Chieftans (the women's high school basketball team on the Navajo Reservation) into successes against the backdrop of the poverty and culture of the reservation.


New Feature Films

Salaam Bombay! (Feature Film Sa311 2003 DVD) - Tells the story of a young boy's life on the streets of Bombay.  Directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), the film was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar and won an award at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.

Fire (Feature Film F5141 2000 DVD) - Banned in India for its look at lesbianism, this film tells the story of two women, stuck in loveless marriages in traditional, extended families, who find each other.  Stars Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das and directed by Deepa Mehta.

Sense and Sensibility (Feature Film Se592 1999 DVD) - Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman star in this 1995 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel. 

Matewan (Feature Film M419 1999 DVD) - This 1987 film, based on a real incident, looks at the effort to organize coal miners in 1920 Mingo County, West Virginia.  Stars Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones, and Mary McDonnell.

OhioLINK has added a number of videos from Ambrose Video Publishing to its Digital Video Collection at http://dmc.ohiolink.edu/media/ffhLogin.  With the addition of the series listed below, as well as some new videos from Films for the Humanities and the Sciences, the Digital Video Collection now holds nearly 1,900 titles.  The titles of the new Ambrose series are:
