We've got a lot of new video coming out of the backroom, many of which are gifts.  Better, there is still a lot more to come!


New Videos

Faces of the Enemy (Film 303.66 F1183 1987 2005 DVD) - Looks at the psychological, sociological, and political aspects of war in an effort to determine what causes nations and individuals to kill.  Based on the book by Sam Keen.

Great Speeches 19 (Film 808.85 G79891 v. 19 2004 DVD) - Six speeches including Barack Obama's keynote speech to the 2004 Democratic National Convention and Lyndon Johnson's "I will not run" speech to the nation.

The Lions of Etosha (Film 599.757 L661 1988 VHS) - This entry in the Sierra Club Series looks at the social lives of the "king of beasts."

Legacy of Shame: Migrant labor, an American Institution (Film 331.544 L5224 2004 DVD) - CBS news correspondents Dan Rather and Randall Pinkston look at the ongoing issue of migrant workers in this 1995 follow-up to Harvest of Shame, originally broadcast in 1960.

Freedom Machines (Film 362.4 F8759 2005 DVD) - Documentary, shown on PBS, that looks at those with disabilities who are using technology to change their lives.

Piano Concertos 13 & 20 (Film 784.262 M877p 2006 DVD) - Mitsuko Uchida plays and directs two Mozart piano concertos recorded live in Salzburg in 2001.

Words of War (Film 808.85 W8917 2004 DVD) - Analyzes the words used to convince Americans to go to war.  Includes addresses from FDR, both Bushes, Clinton, and other presidents.

Approaches to Onsite Management: Community Perspectives (Film 363.7284 Ap655 2002 VHS) - Local leaders, public officials, program managers, and national experts discuss the concepts of community onsite/decentralized wastewater management.

Building on Faith: Making Poverty Housing History (Film 363.58 B8686 2006 DVD) - Looks at how faith groups are working to provide decent, affordable housing.

No! (Film 362.8830899 N6595 2006 DVD) - Looks at the impact of sexual violence on African American women and girls.

Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Film 782.1 B2342 2003 DVD) - From the Opera House Zurich comes this 2001 production of Rossini's The Barber of Seville.

Le Nozze di Figaro (Film 782.1 N8792 1976 1988 VHS) - A two cassette version of Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, in four acts.

The Four Seasons (Film 784.25 Q29 2002 DVD) - Vivaldi's classic work with Julia Fischer on violin.  Filmed in 2001 at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

Great Speeches, the Presidents (Film 808.85 G79891 2004 DVD) - Speeches by U.S. presidents from Calvin Coolidge through Ronald Reagan.

Eroica (Film 784.2184 B3932e 2004 DVD) - From the BBC comes this depiction of the private, first performance of Beethoven's "Eroica" symphony at the Lobkowitz Palace in 1805.

Orangutan (Film 599.883 Or15 1988 VHS) - This entry in the Sierra Club Series looks at the imperiled conditions of the orangutan.


 


New Feature Films

Dead Man Walking (Feature Film D3406 1996 DVD) - Inspired by a true story, Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn star in this story of the relationship between a nun and a condemned man.

Persuasion (Feature Film P4329 1995 1999 DVD) - Amanda Root and Ciarn Hinds star in this 1995 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel.

Jamaica Inn (Feature Film J221939 1991 VHS) - Maureen O'Hara and Charles Laughton star in this Alfred Hitchcock adaptation of a novel by Daphne du Maurier.

Cry Freedom (Feature Film C8897 1987 1999 DVD) - Tells the story of the friendship between black activist Stephen Biko (played by Denzel Washington) and white liberal newspaper editor Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) in apartheid South Africa.

Earth (Feature Film Ea767 1999 2003 DVD) - The second in Deepa Mehta's trilogy (Fire and Water are the other two) is a love story set in the upheaval and violence in 1947 India.

Love is the Devil: A Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (Feature Film L9414 1998 2006 DVD) - Derek Jacobi stars as English painter Francis Bacon in a John Maybury production that portrays the artist as monster.

Reel Baseball (Feature Film R257 2007 DVD) - A two-disc set of 11 shorts and 2 feature films from the early twentieth-century (or in one case back to 1899) with some connection to baseball, such as Babe Ruth staring the 1920 film Headin' Home.

Frankenstein (Feature Film F853 1931 1991 VHS) - Boris Karloff stars in this classic horror film based on the story by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.  It is old enough to be in black and white.

Son of Frankenstein (Feature Film So57 1939 1989 VHS) - Even back then successful films led to sequels.  Actually the third in the series (Bride of Frankenstein came between Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein), this stars Boris Karloff, along with Basil Rathbone and Bella Lugosi.

A Shot in the Dark (Feature Film Sh821 1964 1990) - Peter Sellers stars as Inspector Clouseau in the sequel to The Pink Panther.

When Harry Met Sally (Feature Film W5741 2001 DVD) - Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in this romantic comedy written by Nora Ephron and produced and directed by Rob Reiner.

You've Got Mail (Feature Film Y889 2001 DVD) - The team that brought you Sleepless in Seattle (Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and director Nora Ephron) are back with another romantic comedy.

Zen Noir (Feature Film Z42 2006 DVD) - Mixes Zen thought with a film noir approach  as a detective attempts to solve a murder in a Buddhist temple only to find his logical, crime-solving skills are useless in the intuitive, non-linear Zen world.

The Body in the Library (Feature Film B6329 1987 1997 VHS) - Based on the novel by Agatha Christie and part of the BBC's Miss Marple Series with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple.

Apollo 13 (Feature Film Ap43 1995 2005 DVD) - Tom Hanks starred in this Ron Howard film about the story of the Apollo 13 space flight.  The film may be best known for the line "Houston, we have a problem."

Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey (Feature Film G675 1989 VHS) - Based on the true story of Dian Fossey and her study of rare gorillas and her efforts to protect them.  Sigourney Weaver stars as Fossey.

Valmont (Feature Film V245 1989 2002 DVD) - A second adaptation of the story told in Dangerous Liaisons, this one came out a year later and was pretty much ignored.  Colin Firth, Annette Bening, and Meg Tilly star.

Bear Island (Feature Film B3801 1990 VHS) - Action adventure film based on the novel by Alistair MacLean, best known for The Guns of Navarone.  Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Widmark, and Lloyd Bridges star.

Rope (Feature Film R681 1948 1989 VHS) - An Alfred Hitchcock thriller from 1948 inspired by the Leopold-Loeb murder and starring James Stewart.

The Cider House Rules (Feature Film C486 1999 DVD) - Based on the novel by John Irving (who also won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay) and starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, and Michael Caine, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Ridicule (Feature Film R437 2003 DVD) -  Tale of a minor country aristocrat's attempts to enter the court of Louis XVI in 18th century Versailles.

In the Line of Fire (Feature Film In17 1993 VHS) - Clint Eastwood stars as a Secret Service agent haunted by his failure to protect John F. Kennedy in Dallas and now battling a psychopath threatening to kill the current president - and Eastwood.

Children of a Lesser God (Feature Film C4374 1986 2000 DVD) - The love story of John Leeds (William Hurt), a teacher at a school for  the deaf, and Sarah Norman (Marlee Matlin), who used to be one of its brightest students, but now works at the school as a janitor.

The Blue Max (Feature Film B6252 1966 1984 VHS) - George Peppard stars as a peasant promoted into the elite German air force near the end of World War One and is determined to win Germany's most coveted air award, "The Blue Max."  Also stars James Mason and Ursula Andress.

The Man Who Would Be King (Feature Film M3112 1975 1994 VHS) - Sean Connery and Michael Caine star as British sergeants out to create their own empire in remote Karfiristan.  Based on a story by Rudyard Kipling.

The Little Mermaid (Feature Film L725  1989 2006 DVD) - Walt Disney's take on the Hans Christian Andersen tale.

The Insider (Feature Film In725 1999 DVD) - Al Pacino and Russell Crowe in this film based on a Vanity Fair article about a fired tobacco company executive who is hired to be a consultant for a 60 Minutes piece on the tobacco industry.  Both retired executive and the 60 Minutes producer end up fighting for their professional reputations.

Being There (Feature Film B3968 1979 1990 VHS) - Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine star in the adaptation of the Jerzy Kosinski novel of a simple-minded gardener, whose knowledge of life comes from television, who becomes advisor to a powerful tycoon, who is dying.  Jack Warden, Richard Basehart, and Melvyn Douglas also star.

What's New Pussycat? (Feature Film W5588 1965 1990 VHS) - Peter Sellers and Peter O'Toole head an all-star cast (Romy Schneider, Ursula Andress, Paula Prentiss, and Woody Allen, who wrote the script - his first - for the film) in this look at life in the wild, wacky 60s.

A Beautiful Mind (Feature Film B3854 2001 DVD) - Russell Crowe stars as math genius John Nash in this movie bio.  Directed by Ron Howard and also starring Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly.

Lie Down with Lions (Feature Film L62 1994 1996 VHS) - Timothy Dalton, Marg Helgenberger, and Omar Sharif star in this adaptation of the Ken Follett novel set in the central Asia areas of the former Soviet Union.

Liar Liar (Feature Film L6139 1999 DVD) - Jim Carrey stars as a lawyer who is a habitual liar.  Thanks to his son's birthday wish, however, he can only tell the truth for the next 24 hours.

The Marquise of O (Feature Film M3487 1976 2000 DVD) - Story of a widow saved from a rape only to find herself mysteriously pregnant. Set in 18th century Italy during the France-Prussian War.

The Phantom of the Opera (Feature Film P493 1925 1986 VHS) - Lon Chaney stars in the 1925 original film version.

Shrek (Feature Film Sh84 2001 DVD) - Animated film about an ogre who rescues the princess, who has a secret of her own.  In the process film tweaks Disney and fairy tales, in general.  With the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow.

Footloose (Feature Film F7399 1984 2004 DVD) - Kevin Bacon stars in this tale of pleasure versus morality in which dancing is banned in a Midwestern town.

The 39 Steps (Feature Film T3492 1935 1988 VHS) - This thriller was one of Alfred Hitchcock's earliest films - and still one of his best.

Office Space (Feature Film Of24 1999 VHS) - Story of a cubicle worker who decides to get fired, but instead ends up in management.  Stars Ron Livingston and Jennifer Aniston.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Feature Film Et26 2004 DVD) - Jim Carrey stars as a young man who discovers his girl friend (Kate Winslet) has had their relationship erased from her mind and then opts for the same procedure.  Also stars Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, and Elijah Wood.

Hawaii (Feature Film H3101 1966 1990 VHS) - Julie Andrews, Max Von Sydow, and Richard Harris star in the film adaptation of James Michener's best-selling novel.

When a Man Loves a Woman (Feature Film W5741 1994 1999 DVD) - Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan star in this story of a married couple struggling to deal with her alcoholism.

Smoke (Feature Film Sm75 1995 2003 DVD) - Harvey Keitel and William Hurt head an all-star cast in this story of a group of people who share a friendship with a cigar store manager (Keitel).

About a Boy (Feature Film Ab767 2002 DVD) - Hugh Grant stars as a bachelor trying to avoid responsibility who invents an imaginary son to impress single moms.

Drumline (Feature Film D8441 2003 DVD) - Nick Cannon stars as a street drummer who snares the top spot in a southern university band only to discover it takes more than talent.

Major League (Feature Film M2887 1989 2002 DVD) - Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, and Corbin Bensen star in this comedy about eh Cleveland Indians.  Of course, you could have just watched the Indians for most of the 1960s and 1970s.

A Farewell to Arms (Feature Film F223 1932 198- VHS) - Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes star in this film adaptation of the Ernest Hemingway novel.

Brotherhood of the Rose (Feature Film B795 1984 1992 VHS) - Robert Mitchum, Peter Strauss, and Connie Sellecca star in this thriller based on the novel by David Morrell.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (Feature Film K574 1950 1994 VHS) - Alec Guinness plays all eight relatives standing ahead of the ninth in line (played by Dennis Price) for a dukedom, who decides to kill of all eight.

The Pursuit of Happyness (Feature Film P977 2007 DVD) - Will Smith stars in this film based on the true story of Chris Gardner who went from homeless to Wall Street star.

Ghost in the Shell (Feature Film G3465 1998 DVD) - This award winning anime film, directed by Mamoru Oshii, is set in 2029 and follows a cybernetic agent hot on the trail of a computer virus.

The Odessa File (Feature Film Od28 1974 1988 VHS) - Jon Voight stars in this thriller based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth.

The Sting (Feature Film ST56 1973 1990 VHS) - Robert Redford and Paul Newman team up again, this time as a small0-time crook and a long-time con-man in order to gain revenge against a crime boss.

Mr. Arkadin (Feature Film M8792 1955 1985 VHS) - Orson Welles directs and stars in this story of a reclusive financier living is a castle in Spain.  This somewhat odd picture was done in 1955, but not shown in American theaters until 1962.

Fitzcarraldo (Feature Film F573 1982 1999 DVD) - Story of a man who dreams of building his own private opera house, for performances by greats such as Caruso, in a poor, isolated town in the middle of the Peruvian jungle.

Medicine Man (Feature Film M4687 1999 DVD) - Another picture set in the Amazon.  Sean Connery stars as a reclusive scientist searching for a cancer cure.

A Civil Action (Feature Film C4992 1999 DVD) - John Travolta stars as a high-priced personal injury attorney in this film based on the W. R. Grace litigation case. 

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Feature Film C2801 1958 1989 VHS) - Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, and Burl Ives star in this 1958 film version of the Tennessee Williams play.

Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Feature Film D78 1963 1987 VHS) - Peter Sellers (in several roles) and George C. Scott star in this Stanley Kubrick film about a group of eager military men plan a nuclear holocaust.
