Welcome (back) everyone.  We have a fairly long list since we have three months of videos to catch up on.  Just remember that to help shorten these long lists, In Pictures is going to monthly publication this year.  So, on to what's new and we'll see you again in September!


New Videos

Remaking Medicine: Health Care for the 21st Century (Film 362.10973 R281 2006 DVD) - PBS broadcast looking at critical issues facing the American health care system.

The Tuskegee Airmen (Film 940.544973 T871 2002 DVD) - Ozzie Davis narrates this PBS show that examines the group of African American pilots who fought the Germans in World War II, while fighting racism at home.

Preschoolers: Social and Emotional Development (Film 155.4 D4922 v. 20 1994 DVD) - A look at how preschoolers develop socially and emotionally. 

Preschoolers: Physical and Cognitive Development (Film 155.4 D4922 v. 19 1994 DVD) - A look at how preschoolers develop physically and cognitively.

Treasures III: Social Issues in American Film, 1900-1934 (Film 791.4375 T7103 2007 DVD) - The third set in a series of anthologies from American archives, the four discs (plus a booklet of notes on each film) focus on social issues in early 20th-century America.  Each disc has a theme: The City Reformed, New Women, Toil and Tyranny, and Americans in the Making.  Among the film highlights are How They Rob Men in Chicago (1900), Kansas Saloon Smashers (1901), Trial Marriages (1907), Uncle Sam and the Bolsheviki-I. W. W. Rat (ca. 1919), and Eight Prohibition Newsreels (1923-1933).

Das Rheingold (Film 782.1 R342 1990 2002 DVD) - The 1990 Metropolitan Opera House production of the Richard Wagner opera.

Gotterdammerung (Film 782.1 G712 1990 2002 DVD) - The 1990 Metropolitan Opera House production of the Richard Wagner opera.

Die Walkure (Film 782.1 W1546 1990 2002 DVD) - The 1990 Metropolitan Opera House production of the Richard Wagner opera.

Siegfried (Film 782.1 Si157 1990 2002 DVD) - The 1990 Metropolitan Opera House production of the Richard Wagner opera.

Romeo and Juliet: A Ballet in Three Acts (Film 792.842 R6642 1966 1988 VHS) - The Royal Ballet, with Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, performs the famous love story.

The Stone Flower (Film 792.842 St714 1990 VHS) - The Bolshoi Ballet performs the ballet based on tales by Pavel Bazhov.

The War Room (Film 324.9730928 W195 1993 2004 DVD) - A behind-the-scenes look at Bill Clinton's run for the presidency.  Just in time for another presidential campaign and election.

Infancy: Landmarks of Development (Film 155.4 D4922 v.9 2003 DVD)- Major developments during the first year of life.

The Firebird & Les Noces (Film 792.845 F5146 2002 DVD) - Two Stravinsky ballets performed by the Royal Ballet.

Through Deaf Eyes (Film 362.42 T4165 2007 DVD) - Explores 200 years of deaf life in the United States with a broad perspective on what it means to be deaf.

A Century of Quilts: America in Cloth (Film 746.46 C33396 2006 DVD) - A look at quilts and quilting as records of history, symbols of family and community, and works of art.

The Nutcracker (Film 792.842 N95 1978 VHS) - The Bolshoi Ballet presentation of Tchaikovsky's famous ballet. 

The Queen of Spades (Film 782.1 Q312 1960 1985) - The Bolshoi Opera presents The Queen of Spades, based on a Pushkin story with music by Peter Tchaikovsky.  In Russian with English subtitles.

The Tsar's Bride (Film 782.1 T7829 1966 1985 VHS) - Bolshoi Opera & Theatre production of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's tale of a girl chosen, against her will, to become the bride of Ivan the Terrible.  In Russian with English subtitles.

Global Pentecostalism (Film 270.83 M6134 2007 DVD) - An accompaniment to the book with the same title, this DVD features footage of Pentecostal religious worship and testimony,  plus interviews with Pentecostal ministers and leaders from around the world.

Claudio Arrau: Arrau & Brahms: The Two Romantics (Film 786.2 C571a 1988 VHS) - Famed Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau performs two pieces by Brahms, accompanied by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Santiago.

Claudio Arrau, the Emperor (Film 786.2 C571e 1987 VHS) - Pianist Claudio Arrau performs Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto.

Claudio Arrau: The Maestro and the Masters (Film 786.2 C571m 1988 VHS) - Famed pianist Claudio Arrau live and in concert in his native Chile performing selections from Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and others.

Roots (Film 929.2 R679 1977 2007 DVD) - A four-disc, thirtieth anniversary edition of the TV miniseries that was a huge ratings success.

King Gimp (Film 616.836 K445k 2000 DVD) - Follows Dan Keplinger, who suffers from cerebral palsy, for thirteen years, from elementary school to college graduation.

The King's Miracle (Film 616.836 K445k 2004 DVD) - King Gimp made Dan Keplinger famous.  The King's Miracle follows the next five years of Dan's life. 

The King of Arts (Film 616.836 K445k 2007 DVD) - Dan Keplinger as seen through his art and his commentary on being an artist.

The Hidden World: Survival of Pagan Shamanic Themes in European Fairytales (Film 398.41094 H5307 2007 DVD) - A slide show, focusing to two works of art, designed to accompany the book of the same title.

The Return of the Cuyahoga (Film 363.7394097 R316 2008 DVD) - PBS documentary on the death and rebirth of the Cuyahoga River.

Bush's War (Film 956.70443 B9642 2008 DVD) - A Frontline program looking at the war in Iraq on the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion.

Dizzy Gillespie: Live in '58 and '70 (Film 781.65078 G4125d 1958 2006 DVD) - The jazz great and one of the founding fathers of bebop is filmed in a 1958 concert in Belgium and a 1970 concert in Denmark.

Enclosure 7 (Film 780.92 P2579e 2006 DVD) - A look at the career of 20th century American composer and instrument builder Harry Patch.

Pierre Boulez Conducts Modern Classics (Film 784.2 P614 2006 DVD) - Boulez leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in performances of works by Stravinsky, Debussy, and Berg with vocals by Christine Schafer.

Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes (Film 782.421649 H611 2006 DVD) - Documentary, originally selected for the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and shown on PBS, that looks at how manhood is portrayed in rap music.

500 Years Later (Film 305.896 F5864 2007 DVD) - Chronicles the 500 year struggle of African people around the world for basic human rights.
 


New Feature Films

Inherit the Wind (Feature Film In49 1960 2001 DVD) - Spencer Tracy, Frederic March, and Gene Kelly star in this courtroom drama based on the Scopes trial.

Hoosiers (Feature Film H7692 1986 2006 DVD) - Considered one of the best sports movies of all time, this is the story of a small town high school basketball team's long-short attempt to win the Indiana state title.  Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, and Dennis Hopper star.

The Soldier's Tale (Feature Film So429 2004 DVD) - An animated version of a theatre piece with music by Igor Stravinsky and text by C. F. Ramus, a Swiss poet.  The piece is based on a traditional Russian folk tale.

Into the Wild (Feature Film In889 2008 DVD) - Inspired by the true story of Christopher McCandless, who walked out on a life of privilege to live in the wilderness in search of adventure.

October Sky (Feature Film Oc71998 2005 DVD) - Based on the true story of four Coalwood, WV boys who build rockets in an attempt to escape the coal mines.  The movie is based on the book The Rocket Boys.

The Kite Runner (Feature Film K649 2008 DVD) - The story of a friendship and its ending in Afghanistan in the later 20th century.  Based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini.

101 Dalmatians (Feature Film On21 1961 2008 DVD) - Disney animated film in which Cruella De Vil and her two henchmen kidnap Dalmatian puppies to turn them into a coat, only to be outsmarted by two Dalmatians, several farm animals, and the "barking chain."

A Hard Day's Night (Feature Film H216 1964 2002 DVD) - The Beatles' first film is a spoof of Beatlemania showing 36 hours in the life of the band.

Les Miserables (Feature Film M6871 1935 2007 DVD) - Two film versions of the Victor Hugo novel.  The 1935 film stars Frederic March and Charles Laughton, while the 1952 version stars Michael Rennie.

Basquiat (Feature Film B2932 1996 2002 DVD) - Jeffrey Wright, David Bowie, and Dennis Hopper star in this biopic of Jean-Michel Basquiat, an unknown who burst on the New York art scene in the early 1980s.

Artemisia (Feature Film Ar759 1997 2001 DVD) - This film is based on the life of Artemisia Gentileschi, a seventeenth-century painter who challenged the conventions of her time.

Aguirre: The Wrath of God (Feature Film Ag941972 2000 DVD) - Spanish conquistadors, having conquered the Incas, head over the Andes and down the Amazon in search of gold an the legendary city of El Dorado.

The Painted Veil (Feature Film P1662 2007 DVD) - Naomi Watts and Edward Norton star in this film adaptation of the Somerset Maugham novel.  Set in 1920s China.

Not One Less (Feature Film Y502 2000 DVD) - The story of a young woman who goes to a remote Chinese village as a substitute teacher.

The Good Earth (Feature Film G592 1937 2006 DVD) - The epic love story of an arranged marriage between a Chinese peasant farmer and a kitchen slave.  Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Pearl Buck.

Cranford (Feature Film C851 2008 DVD) - BBC adaptation of the novel by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell is the story of a small village in England in 1842. 

Juno (Feature Film J967 2008 DVD) - Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, and Allison Janney star in this story of a teenager (Page) who must deal with an unplanned pregnancy.

The Last Emperor (Feature Film L3392 1987 2000 DVD) - Bernardo Bertolucci's film based on the life of Pu Yi, China's last emperor, who took the throne in 1908 at age 3.


 


Featured Video - The Artists

This six DVD set covers six episodes of the PBS biographical series American Masters that focused on artists.  The six episodes include:

Disc 1: Richard Avedon: Darkness and Light - Looks at how Avendon changed the face of photography in the 1940s and 1950s.

Disc 2: Alexander Calder - Examines the acclaimed sculptor and his incorporation of movement into sculpture using the mobile.

Disc 3: Robert Rauschenberg: Inventive Genius - A study of how Rauschenberg, beginning in the 1950s, moved from the normal paint on canvas to incorporating multimedia.

Disc 4: Man Ray: Prophet of the Avant-Garde - A look at the photographer, painter, filmmaker, poet, essayist, and philosopher who was a leader of the American modernist movement.

Disc 5: Norman Rockwell: Painting America - Examines the work of the illustrator who painted Americana, principally on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post.

Disc 6: Alfred Stieglitz: The Eloquent Eye - Looks at the "Father of Modern Photography," who championed the rise of photography to an art form.


Other News

     The Friends of the Hiram College Library will be presenting monthly film showings as part of their new film festival called Flicks with Friends: The Friends of the Library Film Festival.  All will be on Wednesdays at 7:30 in the Pritchard Room of the Library.  The first showing will be The Grocer's Son on Wednesday, September 3.  A complete list of dates is online at http://library.hiram.edu/FOLfilms.htm.  Hope to see you there!
