Laptop Loan Policy
Current Hiram College students, staff, and faculty may check out
laptop computers for use within the library. Check-outs are handled at
the Circulation (front) Desk. You must have a current Hiram College ID.
If you are blocked from checking out books, you may not check out a
laptop. You will also need to sign a Laptop Use Agreement Form each time
you check out a laptop.
Laptops may be checked out for two hours, or until the library
closes, for use within the library building. Laptops may not be checked
out overnight or for days when the library is closed. You may renew the
use of the laptop once for an additional two hours (and you may do so
online through the library catalog, just as you would renew a book).
Please note that the library’s catalog system is used for counting the
time, not the laptop’s clock. Power cords may also be checked out for
two hours with one renewal for an additional two hours.
Since battery time for these laptops is two hours or less, you may
also wish to check out a power cord to use. This is viewed as a separate
check-out and has its own fees and fines if lost or late. Please note
that the library is not responsible for lost data, so be sure to back up
your work frequently. Data should not be stored on the laptop’s hard
drive, as it will be erased. Please use your network space for storing
and backing up files. Neither the laptop nor the power cord may be taken
outside the library building.
You are responsible for the safety and security of the laptop while
it is checked out to you. Do not leave the laptop unattended; stolen
laptops will be billed to you. If you lend the laptop to a friend and it
disappears, you will be billed for the replacement cost. Do not tamper
with the laptop or the software pre-loaded on the laptop. Do not
download additional laptop. Use of the laptop also requires you to
follow all applicable U.S. laws and the Hiram College Acceptable Use
Policy.
Fees and Fines:
Overdue laptops – Laptops that are returned after the two-hour
checkout period will be billed $5 per hour with no limit on the total
amount of the fine. Please note that after 24 hours, however, the
library will declare the laptop as missing and bill for the replacement
cost (see below).
Overdue power cords – Power cords that are not returned after the
two-hour checkout period will be billed $5 per hour with no limit on
the amount of the fine. Please note that after 24 hours, however, the
library will declare the power cord as missing and bill for the
replacement cost (see below).
Lost or billed laptops – Laptops that are lost or deemed missing by
the library will be billed for the replacement cost of $1,500.
Lost or billed power cords - Power cords that are lost or deemed
missing by the library will be billed for the replacement cost of $70.
Lost or missing wireless cards – Lost or missing wireless cards
will be billed at $100. In cases where there is a bill for the full cost
of a laptop, the wireless charge is included in the $1,500 charge.
Damaged equipment will be handled on a case-by-case basis with actual
repair costs serving as the guideline for billing.
