Databases/Indexes by Subject:
Middle Eastern Studies

Depending on your specific topic, you may want to use the page for that discipline.  That is, if you are studying the education system in Jordan, you many want to use the Education page, while research on doing business in Saudi Arabia might well send you to the Management page.

The following databases/indexes are designed to provide links to online resources.  To find books, you will need to consult the Hiram College Library Catalog and, perhaps, the OhioLINK catalog.

1. Background information on specific countries - Three publications from the U.S. government provide useful background information on countries.  The CIA World Fact Book, a standard reference work, provides a brief overview with basic data.  The State Department produces a slightly more in-depth series called Background Notes.  Much more detailed, but somewhat dated, is the Country Studies series.  Originally done in print through 1998, the Library of Congress has begun to add updated profiles to the web site.  Business Source Complete includes Background Notes, plus Political Risk Yearbook, which looks at the current political situation in a country, and Country Profiles from the Economist Intelligence Unit.

2. Databases/indexes to find periodical articles
- These databases are designed to help you identify relevant periodical articles through keyword or subject searches.  In most cases there will be links to either the online version of the article or a listing of the library's holdings.  If you are not sure, you may check the library's periodical holdings list and/or its list of online journals.  These databases are listed in the order in which the library recommends them.

4. Databases/indexes of e-journals
- These databases store runs of complete periodical titles.  In most cases the databases listed above will link to the full-text in these databases and you do not need to search them, too.  If, however, you need only a couple of good, scholarly articles on a topic, you should consider searching these databases.
