This page is designed to help practicing
teachers identify resources that may be available to them to keep
current or to identify resources to bring into the classroom.
To that end, databases listed here are available to everyone or to
residents of the state of Ohio.
1. Keeping current with the profession
Teacher Reference Center - EBSCO is currently making this
database free to everyone. It indexes 260 top periodicals and
trade journals for educators. Includes topics such as
assessment, best practices, curriculum development, and more.
2. Two other resources you should know.
Both have a number of resources for teachers and for students.
OPLIN -
This is the public library consortium for the state of Ohio.
Through this site you can access public library catalogs across the
state, as well as a number of databases, many of which are noted
below. Access to some resources may require a valid public
library card.
INFOhio - This is the
consortium of school libraries and media centers for the state of
Ohio. Through this site you can access your school's online
catalog and a number of databases and other resources. Some of
these resources may require a user name and a password, which should
be available from your school librarian/media specialist.
3. Resources Available to You and Your
Students - Thanks to Libraries Connect, a cooperative
agreement between the State Library of Ohio, OhioLINK, OPLIN, and
INFOhio, a number of databases are available to all residents of the
state of Ohio. The grouping below is based on the INFOhio
listing of the Core Collection by Grade Level. The links below
are for the OhioLINK version and will require you to access them
from the Hiram College campus or to have a valid Hiram College
library account. The same databases are available through
OPLIN (which will require a valid public library card from a
participating public library) or through INFOhio (which will require
a user name and password available from the school librarian/media
specialist at a participating school.

4. Free Multimedia Databases -
OhioLINK makes a number of multimedia databases available free to
anyone. Some of these may be useful in the classroom.
5. Lesson Plans Online - A large
number of web sites offer ready made lesson plans on a variety of
topes, as a quick search of any search engine will attest.
Make sure you do some evaluation to make sure you are getting
quality lesson plans. The best sites are often from
educational or teacher associations, state (or province) departments
of education, or sites affiliated with teacher education programs.
The following may be especially useful (NOTE: These are all free
sites):
Educator's Reference Desk (formerly AskERIC) - This free-to-all
online collection contains more than 2,000 lesson plans from
teachers around the world. You can search and sort by subject
and grade level.
FREE (Federal
Resources for Educational Excellence) - Provides teaching and
learning resources from some 30 Federal agencies, such as the
Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, and the White House.
6. Practice Tests - The database below offers practice tests for the
GRE, Praxis 1, and a number of skills (math, reading, etc.) for
middle school and high school students. You need to set up an
account from an authorized site then you can get your practice tests
scored.
