 Journals vs. Magazines

This page is designed to help you distinguish between a journal, also called a scholarly journal or a research journal, and a magazine, also called a popular magazine.

Southwestern College Library - Good because it is the only one to introduce a third concept - trade publications.

Harvard College Library - Comes in two parts (the link goes to part 1) with the first giving some basic characteristics of magazines and journals and part two looking at what falls between the scholarly and popular.

Central Missouri State Library - Great description of Peer-Reviewed Journals.

University of Michigan Social Work Library - Another good, basic side-by-side listing of characteristics.

University of Texas at San Antonio Library  - A good basic chart, with the added advantage of listing several reference works (Hiram has them but with different call numbers) to give you further information about a particular publication.
