The Hiram College Library is pleased to offer
a number of workshops designed to introduce you to specific library
resources or services. These 30 to 60 minute workshops (Basic
HTML runs 90 minutes) are FREE and no registration is required.
All will be held in the Library Instruction Room on the third floor
of the Library. Workshops are open to all Hiram College
students, faculty, and staff and are designed to be "how-to" in
their focus.
Workshops are listed below alphabetically by title (with a
description) and by date and time.
Don't see the workshop you were hoping for? Let us know your
suggestions by email
(everettdd@hiram.edu). We probably won't be able to offer
it this time, but we are always looking for more ideas for next
time.
Workshops by Title
Basic CSS - Now that you know HTML,
take your web designing skills to the next level by using Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS). With CSS you can control the look and feel
of your HTML document in an organized and efficient manner.
With CSS you will be able to add a new look to your webpage or
completely restyle a web site with only a few changes to your CSS
code. Knowledge of Basic HTML (can be shown by completing the
two part Basic HTML workshop) is required. Taught on Tuesday,
September 12 at 4:00 p.m.

Basic HTML - Part 1 - Even with HTML editors, such as
Dreamweaver, FrontPage, and GoLive available, knowing how to
manually write HTML using a simple text editor, such as Notepad, is
still a very important skill to have. In this workshop you
will be introduced to HTML and learn the basics of creating a web
page. By the end of the workshop you will have started your
own web page that you created without any help from a web editor.
This workshop covers starting the webpage, basic rules, creating
links, adding color, font and style. Be prepared to sign up
for part two to learn even more about creating a webpage.
Useful for anyone interested in beginning to create web pages.
Taught on Thursday, August 31 at 4:00 p.m.
Basic HTML - Part 2 - This workshop is a continuation of the
Basic HTML - Part 1 workshop. By the end of the workshop, you
will have your own web page that you created without any help from a
HTML editor and the basic knowledge needed to create and edit a web
page. This part covers adding images, lists, tables, and
buttons to your web page. Taught on Thursday, September 7 at
4:00 p.m.
Citation Searching with ISI: Using Footnotes to Find Resources on a
Topic - ISI Web of Science uses citation patterns in
published articles as a way to access the literature on a topic.
A very different, but often highly successful (especially in the
sciences) way to search for publications. Despite the word
Science in the title, the database does cover the humanities and the
social sciences, too. All disciplines, but especially useful
for the sciences. Taught on Tuesday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m.
EBSCOhost Supersearcher! - With more than 50 databases
accessible through the EBSCOhost search interface (including
Academic Search Premier, the library's most searched database), it
is only a matter of time until you will need to use this search
engine. Come learn tricks that will get more out every search
you do in an EBSCO database. Taught on Tuesday, September 19
at 12:30 p.m.
Everything Old is New Again: Introducing the Library's Record
Collection - Technologies do not come and go, at least as far as
the Library is concerned. They come, but they stay, sometimes
forever, if they are dependable. The history of recorded music
is tucked away in the Library's collection of thousands of
long-playing records (LPs), to which anyone can have access.
Located in the Center for Educational Technology, the library
currently houses more than 6,000 LPs, produced from the 1950s to the
1980s when CDs took over the market. But much of this music
has never been reissued on CD, and so the only (legal) means of
access is to fire up the old record player. We have several,
so you don't need your own. This workshop will introduce those
unfamiliar with music LPs to the basics of handling and playing
them, as well as locating music through the Library's catalog.
Enter the fascinating world of vinyl! Taught on Tuesday,
September 12 at 12:30 p.m.

Image Databases: The View on What's Available - Most library
databases are bibliographic in nature. They send you to print
books, print articles, or online versions of print materials.
But the library also has a number of databases that cover images,
from photographs to images of famous art works to full-length
educational videos. Come learn what these databases have to
offer. Taught on Tuesday, September 19 at 4:00 p.m.
RefWorks: A Bibliographic Management Tool That's Fun for the Whole
Family - RefWorks provides you with a password-protected
space to create your own personal database of bibliographic
citations, notes, and links. You can add, store, and export
references for term papers, annotated bibliographies, and other
projects. RefWorks even automatically formats citations
in any style needed. Learn how to use this remarkable tool in
just one easy lesson. For anyone trying to keep track of
bibliographic citations. Taught on Thursday, September 7 at
12:30 p.m.
