February first marked the beginning of Black History Month and to celebrate, we will be making a few posts this month highlighting works by the Black community and about Black History. Black History Month officially began in 1976 when President Gerald Ford told Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History Month was originally started by what is now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) and they continue to educate celebrate Black history in America today. In addition to being celebrated in the United States, Black History month has begun to be celebrated in countries across the world. Throughout the month we will be making a few posts highlighting different portions of the Black Community and Black history. For today we would like to highlight https://asalh.org/ as a resource to learn more about the history of Black History month and its origins. Additionally, we subscribe to ASALH publications, including the Journal of African American History and the Black History Bulletin. Both are available in print on the magazine racks in the Schneider Room. Historic issues are available digitally via JSTOR. Ask a librarian to learn more!
