To celebrate National Authors Day, we have put together a few brief bios, and a selection of books, of some of the folks at the library’s favorite authors. We hope you learn more about an author you might know or find someone new to check out!  

John Green  

If you are looking for an author that you may have read before, then maybe John Green is the guy you are looking for. Green is probably most well-known for his award-winning YA novels like The Fault in our Stars and Paper Towns; however, you may also know him from his YouTube channels that he runs with Brother Hank, Crash Course, and Vlogbrothers. Not all of his novels are YA fiction. Green actually recently published The Anthropocene Reviewed which is a book of essays on “different facets of the human-centered planet.”

Kurt Vonnegut  

If you are looking for some classic Sci-Fi, then maybe Kurt Vonnegut And with classics like Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat’s Cradle Kurt Vonnegut has been hailed as one the most important contemporary writers in the US. A veteran of WWII, Vonnegut integrated many of his life experiences, both from the war and after, into his Sci-Fi novels. His first novel Player Piano was published in 1952 and for the decades after Vonnegut would write many award-winning novels and short stories before his death in 2007.

Sarah Kay 

If you are a fan of poetry, we highly recommend checking out Sarah Kay. Kay is an author, poet and educator with multiple published works. Born and raised in New York, Kay is well known for her spoken word poetry and has even given two TED Talks. Nowadays Kay has been working on Project VOICE, which is an educational project focused on using “spoken word poetry to entertain, educate, and inspire” groups around the world.

Rick Riordan  

If you are interested in fantasy, and especially mythology, then we recommend checking out one of Rick Riordan’s works. Riordan is probably most well known as the author of the Percy Jackson series, and though his books are Young Adult Fiction they are a favorite of readers young and old alike. With many of his novels set in the same universe, Riordan is a master of world-building with his combination of modern and fantasy themes.
