How to cite IBISWorld correctly.

What is the Industry SIC or NAICS code?

These codes help you research specific industries. NAICS replaced SIC in 1987, but many databases and print sources still use SIC, so both can be useful.

🔍 Three Key Sources for Market Research

  • Economic Census – Official numbers for your industry: number of businesses, employees, payroll, and sales. Compare national, state, county, and city data.
  • Nexis Uni – Trade magazines, industry news, and company updates. See trends, competition, and sometimes local insights.
  • IBISWorld – Expert summaries of your industry. Learn about growth, key players, and national trends (note: mostly national-level data).

Statistics and Data

📊 How do I find Market Research with the Economic Census?

The Economic Census (every 5 years, latest 2022) provides data on industries, including: number of businesses, employees and payroll, sales or revenue. You can compare data for the U.S., your state, counties, metro areas, and cities.

  1. Go to data.census.gov and click Advanced Search.

  2. Select 2022 in Years and Economic Census → Core Statistics → Summary Statistics in Surveys.

  3. Choose your geographies: nation, state, county, metro area, or city.

  4. Click Search and open a table labeled BASIC (e.g., EC2200BASIC).

  5. To focus on a specific industry, reopen filters → Codes → Industry Codes (NAICS) and select your industry.

  6. Compare across geographies and summarize number of businesses, sales, employees, and local vs. national trends.
