The Economic Census (every 5 years, latest 2022) provides data on industries, including: number of businesses, employees and payroll, sales or revenue. You can compare data for the U.S., your state, counties, metro areas, and cities.
Go to data.census.gov and click Advanced Search.
Select 2022 in Years and Economic Census → Core Statistics → Summary Statistics in Surveys.
Choose your geographies: nation, state, county, metro area, or city.
Click Search and open a table labeled BASIC (e.g., EC2200BASIC).
To focus on a specific industry, reopen filters → Codes → Industry Codes (NAICS) and select your industry.
Compare across geographies and summarize number of businesses, sales, employees, and local vs. national trends.
