For complete information about accessing the New York Times, please use the New York Times guide. 

The Hiram College Library subscribes to the following newspapers in print. You are welcome to come to the library and read them on a regular basis. The Library keeps about 90 days of print newspapers.

Weekly Villager (Garrettsville, OH)

The Portager (Portage County, OH) - offers an online edition at no cost, and a bi-weekly print paper with expanded content.

  Creating an Account  

You can create your New York Times account in four steps:

Step 1: Click here to begin.

  • Note that you may have only one account linked to a specific email address.
  • If you have already registered your email address on the NY Times site for a free account, click on “Already Have an Account? Log in here” link.  This will register you to the Hiram College account.
  • If you have a paid account and wish to switch to the Hiram account, please contact the Library for instructions. 

Step 2: Click “Create Account”

Step 3: Complete the registration fields (we recommend you use your Hiram email address)

Step 4: Test your login at www.nytimes.com

  • You must have a valid Hiram College email address to register.
  • Our access does not include crossword puzzles, Times Insider, or the New York Times Crosswords apps.
  • Because of certain copyright restrictions, access to archived articles published from 1923 through 1980 is limited to 5 pdf articles per day.

  Renewing an Account  

If you have already used the library's New York Times subscription to create an account, you will have to renew the account annually. 

On campus users: visit NewYorkTimes.com/GroupPass to renew or to check the expiration date of your library account. If your account has expired, follow the directions to renew. 

Off campus users:

  • Visit accessnyt.com
  • Select Hiram College from the list of schools (you may be prompted to login with your Hiram College username and password)
  • Click the blue "Go" button
  • Enter your NY Times account information when prompted (note this should be your Hiram College email address, but it is not likely your Hiram College password)

 

  Download the iPad App 

Go to the App Store on your iPad and download the New York Times app.

  Features  

International Edition: Edited in London, Hong Kong, and New York, the International New York Times provides news from a global perspective.  The Chinese and Spanish editions are also available on the web.

Search features: A single search box, with result filtering options (date ranges, document type, section, author, etc), provides easy access to articles, blogs, obituaries, media, and other content.

Historical coverage: All articles published since 1851 are available, although there are some restrictions on the years 1923 through 1980.

Multimedia: The New York Times contains slide slows, interactive maps, videos, and other media resources.

This separate site is designed to help bring the New York Times into the classroom by providing resources designed for education.  It includes:

  • Discipline-specific areas of study
  • Classroom discussion prompts
  • Suggested learning outcomes
  • General Instructional Strategies to promote student achievement
  • Co-Curricular Activities, including events, discussions, and contests

Using NYTimes.com/edu requires a separate user set up.  While you can use the same username/password as your New York Times account (see above), you must use your hiram.edu email address.  You may register here.

The Economist: The library subscribes to the print edition of The Economist. To read the most recent editions, visit the Schneider Room on the library's first floor (the room with the curved wall of booths that overlooks the fountain). To read past editions, move to the lower level. From the elevator, move to your left and go down the hallway. Back issues of periodicals, including the Economist, are on your right. Any of the current news sources on the other tabs will cover sports. These databases specifically include only sports content.
