"There is a form of lyric nonfiction known as the braided essay. In these pieces, threads of narrative are interwoven with fragments of science, history, or politics. As the essay unfolds, the fragments create new layers of meaning through their juxtaposition—by being placed side-by-side."

Understand Your Assignment

  • Essay 2: 1,250–1,750 words, braided essay style.
  • Team selects one research article relevant to U.S. influence in Asia.
  • Individual essays pull evidence from the team article.

Braided strands to consider including:

  • Friend / Therapist – Personal opinion or first-hand experience. You can quote or cite something from Essay 1 if it’s relevant.
  • Scientist / Researcher – Paraphrase and explain facts, data, or background about your topic, with proper citations and a Works Cited entry.
  • Commentator – Share your take on the significance of those facts.
  • Preacher – Reflect on the global impact and answer the “so-what” question. Why should this matter to a broader audience?
  • Judge – Include your rating of your topic and explain why.

Tip: Your team article can feed multiple strands.
