✨ Common Read Connection – “Plague” Essay from The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green

Assistant Professor of Psychology Evan Wilhelms and History Lecturer Don Fleming will explore how humans have responded to pandemics from the Black Plague to COVID-19. They’ll discuss the history of epidemics like cholera and smallpox, as well as current research on grief, misinformation, and resilience—showing how these responses shape public decision-making during crises.

This year’s Common Read is The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, with events taking place across Portage County libraries and at Hiram College—including art projects, book discussions, and gaming nights.

Sponsored by Hiram College’s Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
