✨ Common Read Connection – “Plague” Essay from The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green

Assistant Professor of Psychology Evan Wilhelms and History Lecturer Don Fleming will explore how humans have responded to pandemics from the Black Plague to COVID-19. They’ll discuss the history of epidemics like cholera and smallpox, as well as current research on grief, misinformation, and resilience—showing how these responses shape public decision-making during crises.

This year’s Common Read is The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, with events taking place across Portage County libraries and at Hiram College—including art projects, book discussions, and gaming nights.

Sponsored by Hiram College’s Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Join Us: September 17th at 4:15 PM in the Pritchard Room on the second floor of the library for this fascinating talk.

Merose Hwang conducted a project in South Korea comparing the Sewol 4.16 Disaster of 2014 and the Itaewon 10.29 Tragedy of 2022. She will share “youth deathscapes” that emerge from the state and society’s failure to maintain safety and public empathy, revealing signals of a strained democracy. The talk will explore historical circumstances surrounding these deaths and how survivors create new, alternative spaces of mourning to come to terms with lost peers while navigating social and political pressures. History comes alive at the Hiram College Library this month with two special events you won’t want to miss!

April 27 - 2 pm - Pritchard Room - Hiram Antiques Road Show! We'll spotlight the collections of the Hiram Historical Society members. Join us for a fascinating display, where history comes to life through timeless treasures! Come explore rare finds, share stories, and enjoy a great time with fellow antique lovers. Bring a friend and your curiosity!
Hope to see you there!

April 29 - 7 pm - Pritchard Room - What happens when war takes the ones you love far away?
In 1861, James A. Garfield left home to fight in the Civil War. His wife, Lucretia, remained in Hiram—raising their child, managing their home, and seeking purpose in a world transformed by war. They had letters, and hope, but no idea what the future held.

Meet Lucretia in this live historical performance by Debbie Weinkamer, told through Lucretia’s own letters and words. Hosted by the Friends of the Hiram College Library.

Both events are free and open to all—students, faculty, staff, and the community!

Join us for this free event next Saturday, Feb. 22nd! The library is putting together an exhibit of artifacts from the Hiram College Archives about James A. Garfield's campaign for the presidency. The materials date back to 1880 and earlier! Charlie Goodyear actually used our archives to help write his book, and he is an incredible speaker. So interesting! And wait until you see the flag . . .it is huge, a true testament to community spirit. But don't take our word for it, come see the flag, and hear the author speak about Hiram's own, James A. Garfield! 😊
