The Hiram College Library subscribes to thousands of journals, databases, and eBooks available online from on or off campus. In addition, our membership in the OhioLINK consortium grants us access to thousands more eBooks and eJournals along with access to physical materials at 117 Ohio libraries. Note: not all eJournals and eBooks from OhioLINK are loaded into the Hiram College catalog. Double check these sources just in case!

Linking to Library Resources

When linking to library resources, never copy the link directly from the search bar. You must always find a permalink/permanent link/stable URL. These links will authenticate users so that they can access materials from off campus.

A permalink begins with a specific string of text called a proxy prefix. Hiram's prefix is: https://login.hc.opal-libraries.org/login?url=

The content following the equal sign is the link to the specific item. The video below demonstrates locating permalinks in EBSCO databases.

Streaming Video

Streaming video has become particularly important in the past few years. The library provides access to three large collections of streaming video, which use different economic models. If you cannot find a needed video in one of these collections, please contact the library director. The descriptions listed below are different than those in the Database A-Z list, so you may want to look at those as well, since that may well be what your students see.

Films on Demand This link opens in a new window
Films on Demand (FOD) offers a set of 600+ curriculum-focused streaming video titles produced by Films for the Humanities and Sciences.
Kanopy This link opens in a new window
Kanopy provides access to thousands of videos, mostly documentaries, but some feature films are available through the Criterion/Janus films included in the database. You are able to search the entire collection and view any video you wish. Once a video is viewed a fourth time for 30 seconds or more, the library is billed $150 for a one-year license. There is a cap on how much can be licensed this way so the library can live within its budget.
Alexander Street Video This link opens in a new window
Alexander Street video provides access to thousands of videos, mostly documentaries, with no overlap with Kanopy. Collections include Bullfrog Films, Icarus Films, BBC, Sony Pictures Classics, and more. If you find a title you want to use, click into it, and use the Embed/Link option below the screen to find a link to add to Moodle.

Swank - Swank licenses feature films for educational streaming purposes. The license allows you to place a link in Moodle so students can view the film. Swank uses a different economic model in which the library prepays for a one-year licenses for a number of videos. If you are looking for a specific feature film, begin by searching the Hiram College Swank Portal. You will need to set up an account, but this will allow you to see what the library has already licensed. If you don't see what you want, you should search the Swank catalog here. Once you find a film you wish to have added to the library's portal, contact the library director who will work with Swank to do that and provide you with a direct link to place in Moodle. Those accessing the films on their iPad will be asked to download the Swank app.

SAGE Video Counseling & Psychotherapy Collection This link opens in a new window
Over 480 streaming videos on topics including counseling research methods, counseling setting/client groups, theory and approaches, counseling skills, and professional issues.

Netflix Educational Screening Policy

Netflix allows one-time educational screenings of some Netflix Original documentaries. For more information see Netflix's policy on Educational Screenings of Documentaries.

In addition, Netflix has made available a selection of documentary content available to view for free on YouTube.
