Sophie McCurdy is the library’s Government Documents and Reference Intern and is a third-year English Major with a minor in Asian studies here at Hiram. In her free time, Sophie enjoys doing a variety of crafts including embroidery, painting, and making butterflies out of Ginko leaves. As an English major Sophie reads a lot of fiction so she enjoys reading more nonfiction works in her free time on a variety of subjects. One such topic she has enjoyed researching and reading about is how Native American agricultural practices have been combined with West African cooking techniques to create what we nowadays refer to as “southern food.” Sophie also wants to remind everyone of the vast amount of online databases the library has to offer, from documentaries offered through Kanopy to decades of government documents on file, there is something for everybody.
Riley Williams is a Writing for the Web Intern here at the library and mainly works on writing content for the Library’s blog (Hello!). Riley is also a Senior Political Science and Communication double major with the intent of pursuing work with nonprofit organizations after graduation. In their free time, Riley enjoys listening to music, reading, writing, and watching anime. While they mostly read poetry, Riley also enjoys a good mystery novel every once in a while. They are currently reading a horror manga called Uzumaki by Junji Ito. Other than spending time at the library, one of Riley’s favorite things to do at Hiram is to study outside in the fall when all of the leaves are changing and enjoy the fresh air. One thing Riley would recommend checking out is the various movies and board games that the library has that you can check out!
Kerry Hamilton is a cataloging intern here at the library. She is currently an English Major and plans to go to Kent for her Master’s in Library Science to be a Librarian. Kerry’s favorite parts of the library are the fourth floor and the annex and she recommends that visitors check out the archives when they get a chance. Kerry enjoys reading, sewing, embroidery, hanging out with friends, and listening to music in her free time. Kerry’s favorite book is Burnt Shadows by Kamila Shamise and loves reading Contemporary books. Her favorite part about being at Hiram is being able to work at the Library.
When not in her office, Library Director Janet Vogel can be found in the Schneider Room, one of her favorite parts of the library. Originally completing her undergrad as a history major, Janet went on to get a Master’s degree in Public History and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science after working at a public library. Much of Janet’s free time is spent reading, traveling, visiting museums, and learning new things; one of her favorite topics to learn about is the history of food and in particular 20th-century food trends. As a librarian, Janet sees picking a favorite book as a difficult choice to make, though she does enjoy reading mysteries and when it comes to nonfiction, books on history as well.
Janet loves just about everything at Hiram and especially excited to watch the Men’s and Women’s wrestling teams in the coming 2021-22 school year. She loves teaching library instruction sessions and wants everyone to know that those at the library are always happy to answer questions and help in any way they can, “librarians are just regular people who like to solve puzzles and try to find information.”
In honor of Halloween fast approaching the library has compiled a list of 13 Bone-Chilling Books to get you in the Halloween mood! There are a variety of tales from classics like Agatha Christie stories to newer tales of horror like Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado. All of these spooky stories can be found here at the library, so if you need any help locating these or any other book, movie, or article do not hesitate to visit the Ask Here Desk!

Terri Foy is the Circulation Officer at the Library. Like most librarians she has a Masters in Library and Information Science though she studied Social Sciences as an undergrad. She loves spending time around the library with the fourth floor, in particular, being her favorite. Outside of work Terri enjoys reading, listening to music, bowling, searching for painted rocks, and spending time with her granddaughters. Terri mainly reads historical fiction, to pick just one favorite is too difficult a task, and she is also a fan of civil war documentaries by Ken Burns. She loves the gardens around Hiram and how tight-knit the community is here. Terri loves how much the library offers and says that “as I walk through the stacks, searching for Interlibrary loan or OhioLINK materials, I always find something new to read,” and recommends that visitors check out the different CDs, DVDs, games, and puzzles that can be borrowed from the library!
October is a very busy time of year, Classes are in full swing, the leaves are changing, and it is getting colder outside. October is also special because it is Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th, and LGBTQ+ History Month, which runs the whole month of October.
Hispanic Heritage Month is nationally observed from September 15th to October 15th. The start date is a nod to the independence days of a number of different Hispanic countries. This is a time to uplift, celebrate, and enjoy the many aspects of Hispanic culture through music, movies, art, and books!
LGBTQ+ History Month has been nationally observed since 1995. October was chosen because it coincides with National Coming Out Day which falls on the 11th of October. This month is a time to learn about, commemorate, and celebrate the accomplishments and history of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Asexual, Intersex, Queer, Nonbinary, and so many more individuals contributions and achievements.
In honor of both, below is a short selection of books to add to your reading list to celebrate! All of these amazing books are available here at the library, or through the online catalog. If you need any help finding a book just ask anyone at the front desk or one of the librarians.
